Hello to Everybody
Welcome to the August 2011 issue of "On the Brighter Side." This month we celebrate the birthday of Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star Spangled Banner. He was born on August 1, 1779 in Carroll County, Maryland.
The Star Spangled Banner was a poem written by the 35 year old lawyer and amateur poet in 1814, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry, by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay, during the Battle of Fort McHenry, in the War of 1812. Although the song has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today. The fourth stanza is added on more formal occasions. The fourth stanza includes the line "And this be our motto: In God is our Trust." The United States adopted "In God We Trust" as its national motto in 1956. The Star Spangled Banner was recognized for official use, by the Navy in 1889. Our president, Woodrow Wilson, recognized it in 1916. It was made a national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931. This document was signed by President Herbert Hoover.
Another historical event that took place in the month of August was the adding of our 50th state, Hawaii. Hawaii was added on August 21, 1959. It is the only state to be completely surrounded by water and one of two states (Alaska is the other) that does not share a coastline with another state. The adding of Hawaii added big bucks to our nations economy. Tourism in Hawaii creates jobs, jobs create taxes, and taxes create benefits for the government coffers. Another claim to fame for Hawaii, it is the birthplace of our 44th president, Barack Obama. Although Hawaii is considered an Island Paradise, you would think that it would be the number one vacation destination. Not so. A poll by Harris Interactive (a research marketing firm) revealed that Italy was the top travel destination for American travelers in 2010. If you had a choice between Hawaii and Italy, which would you choose? Italy would get my vote!

Thank You
Being grateful can get us through even the toughest of times. Gratitude is the highest form of emotion that we can feel. When we feel gratitude, even for the small things, we are creating a win-win energy field around us, an energy system to success. We feel peace, joy, happiness, and contentment at the highest level. Gratefulness also certainly brings us into the present moment. Take a few moments and think about all of the things that you are grateful for. Don't dwell on the past, thinking about what could have been. Live in the moment. Look around you, you have a wonderful place to live, good food, excellent caregivers, family, and friends that love and care about you. Being grateful will bring a smile to your face. It's impossible to frown when you're smiling. |
In the Spotlight |
Ms. Olive Ford is in our August "Spotlight."
Olive was born Olive Aanstoos in Colon Beach, Republic of Panama, on May 12, 1919. Olive grew up in this tropic paradise with one sister and three brothers. Her father, Theodore, was the historian for the Panama Canal Project and her mother Helen, worked as a censor for the US government during WWII.
Olive was a "born" athlete. She spent her days playing tennis and swimming. Her determination and skills on the tennis court resulted in her becoming the Junior Women's Tennis Champion for the Canal Zone in 1936.
All too soon her carefree life took a new direction. After graduating high school in Colon, it was time for college. Olive enrolled at New York University to study Drama. Once finished at NYU, she studied at East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in Pennsylvania, where she earned her teaching degree.
After college she returned to Panama in time for WWII. She gained a lot of satisfaction entertaining the troops by being a part of the USO tours throughout Central and South America. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Captain Herbert "Buzz" Ford from Hopewell, Virginia. She and Buzz married in 1946 and moved to Hopewell. Here she became a mother to three wonderful daughters, Jean, Frances, and Margaret. Her leisure time was spent working on her needlepoint and sewing for the girls. Outside of the home she was dedicated to the Appomattox Garden Club, her bridge club and her golf game. Tennis was still her favorite pastime and she continued to play until she moved into her new home at Brighter Living.
All of her life she was adventurous in her travels. She and Buzz took great joy traveling all over the United States, Russia, China, the Philippines, and Egypt. When asked one time many years ago "what is your favorite hobby?" Olive answered without hesitation, "making friends of course."
Olive has been a resident of Brighter Living since August 2009. In this short period of time she has made so many new friends. She has a great sense of humor and is always smiling. When I think of a "Southern Belle" or a "Social Butterfly" I think of Olive. Thank you Olive for sharing your interesting life with us.

Courtyard Garden Update
In early May the residents and I planted our herb garden with a variety of different plants. With the spring rains and the hot summer sun, they have flourished beyond our expectations. Olive Ford and her daughter Jean, helped with the original planting, and later she and Olive added the flower plants. The herb and flower mixture have created a beautiful garden with bright colorful blooms with many different textures.

Shining Stars |
Jane Stokes is our "Shining Star" for the month of August.
Jane was born and raised in Enfield, North Carolina. Like so many people in
this area, Ft Lee brought her here. Her husband, John was stationed at Ft.
Lee and when he was discharged in 1974, they decided to stay in Virginia.
Jane is the proud mother of four children and the grandmother of seven. Her oldest grandson, PFC Lavoy Cofield is currently serving his country. He is stationed at Ft. Lee. Her oldest granddaughter, Imari is an honor student at Thomas Dale High School. She will graduate in 2012 with plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jane's other grandchildren are fourteen, thirteen, ten and the twins are eight. Their plans for the future have yet to be determined, according to Grandma Jane.
Jane was raised in a religious home. Her mother was the "Mother" of her church. Her father was a Sunday School Superintendent. She has two brothers that are ministers and a sister that is a pastor. Jane herself, became an ordained minister in September 2010. She is a member of The Prince of Peace Evangelistic Center in Colonial Heights, Virginia. Although Jane doesn't have her own church, she speaks at various churches on a regular basis and delivers the sermon at her church the last Sunday of each month.
When not working, Jane likes to travel. She has taken several cruises and is planning a trip to Las Vegas in October. |

Brighter Living Celebrates Independence Day
The residents and staff of Brighter Living held their annual July 4th celebration on Tuesday, July 5th. The residents invited friends and family members to join them in celebrating our nation's independence. Mr. Gil Edwards provided the entertainment with several patriotic songs, including, America, and God Bless the USA.
The kitchen staff out-did themselves again with a wide assortment of finger foods. We had one of the most popular 4th of July foods, hotdogs with all of the trimmings, and iced cold lemonade. Dessert was fresh fruit, including strawberries, pineapple and cantaloupe. What would a 4th of July be without ice cream? A sundae bar was set up with all of the toppings to make any kind of sundae that you could imagine. Some folks enjoyed the standard with vanilla ice cream and chocolate or strawberry toppings. Other used their imaginations and created their own masterpieces. The most delicious looking one that I saw was strawberry ice cream topped with chocolate sauce, nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry on top.
