Herefordshire Volunteer Centre
Some organisations have contacted the Volunteer Centre as some insurers have started asking their volunteers for additional premiums if they use their own vehicles for volunteer driving.  In the past, provided they were notified first, insurers did not make any additional charges for drivers transporting individuals in a voluntary capacity.  If any objections were raised, a letter from the organisation was always sufficient.

However, up and down the country, Volunteer Centres are now reporting difficulties, with premiums of £10-£20 per year being demanded for drivers, even if they are only volunteering a couple of hours per week.  Angela Legg, Volunteering Services Manager, would therefore like to find out what the scale of the problem is in Herefordshire so that she can take it up nationally with Volunteering England and the Association of British Insurers.

So if you have experienced any difficulties in this area, can you inform her of the following?

a)      How many drivers have been asked for additional premiums?
b)      Have you written to the insurers and, if so, what was the outcome?
c)      Roughly, how much driving do they do each week?
d)      What is the purpose of their volunteer driving?
e)      How much have they been asked for?
f)       Names of insurance companies requesting extra premiums?
g)      Name of your organisation.

She would be grateful for this information by the first week of April and can be contacted by email.
