The Holiday Season!
|
Is your office like many in the country? Things quiet down in our office around the 15th of the month and generally don't get overly active until mid January. That's good in some ways and not so good in others. How can you make this time more productive than it generally is? Here are a few ideas that might help:
First of all, think time management:
- What is it that you have not had time to do in a long while?
- - Clean up files
- - Create new files/reports/articles/presentations
- - Contact clients (old and new)
- - Clean out desk drawers
Then, think skill management:
- How would you like to further develope your staff
- - Do cross training amongst personnel
- - Conduct staff training sessions that you lead
- - Offer staff training sessions that other staff members lead
- - If someone is not up to speed in a certain area assign them a buddy to learn from
- - This might also be an ideal time to create mentoring duos, where an individual has a chance to learn skills formally or informally from a mentor. These are not concrete skills, but soft skills - how to deal with people or situations
Once you have accomplished this, use the less hectic time to learn about diversity:
- Find out who has a hobby and ask that person to share it with the rest of the staff
- Bring in foods from other cultures and share it (perhaps someone on staff cooks those foods)
- Have clients come in and spend time filling your people in on their business
Yes, the holiday season is a valuable time - a time to look ahead and learn more - about each other, your clients, even about your business. Although you may have set goals earlier for next year, this is a good time to review those goals and help staff understand their roll in achieving them. |
