Start the School Year off with Something Big - Take Steps To End Homelessness

You can help take steps to end homelessness in our community. Since last year we've reduced the number of homeless families in our community by 5.2 precent. You can make a difference this year.

Our goal is to have 4,000 people participate in Reston Interfaith Help the Homeless events. Your participation and contribution will be multiplied in its impact with incentives from Fannie Mae.

 Laurel Learning Center Triathletes

For the second year the school age children at our Laurel Learning Center spent the summer training for the Reston Kids Triathlon. The results were outstanding. All 18 students who participated finished the race. A major personal accomplishment was that a student with special needs learned to ride a bike and swim and then competed in the triathlon.

Well Prepared To Go Back to School

You enabled 2,000
local Reston and Herndon area students to be prepared for this school year. The "Back-to-School" drive organized in partnership with Kids R First and your generosity provided 2,000 backpacks and 300 gift cards to Payless Shoe Stores and the Hair Cuttery, which allows these students to start school successfully.

With the Chill In the Air

To keep those in need warm and sheltered during the colder seasons the Winter Coat Closet will open on November 12 and the Hypothermia Prevention Center will operate every night starting December 1 - March 31.

Volunteers and donors are needed to support these programs.

Volunteers can prepare and serve hot meals or help to set up the closet, accept and sort incoming donations, and distribute coats to customers. The Winter Coat Closet also needs new or gently used coats for men, women, and children, but especially in larger sizes for men and small sizes for children. New hats, gloves, and scarves are also greatly appreciated.

There will be two volunteer training sessions for new Hypothermia Prevention program participants on Sunday, October 28, and Thursday, November 8.  Please contact Nate King at 571.323.9569 for more information about donating to or volunteering for these programs.

Reston Interfaith along with Fairfax County and the Hunter Mill District Supervisor's Office work in partnership to operate the North County Hypothermia Prevention Center and the Hunter Mill District Winter Coat Closet.

Hats Off to an Outstanding Business Partner

NII Holdings works year round to provide support for our neighbors in need. Recently they hosted 60 golfers from 30 companies to hit the links for the 5th Annual NII Holdings Charity Golf Outing. Steve Dussek, NII CEO, proudly presented Kerrie Wilson, RI CEO, with the proceeds from this year's outing in support of affordable housing.

In addition, NII continues to foster creative and innovative thinking by hosting a career day for middle and high school students. Participants learn what is needed to work in the telecommunications field and offer feedback on creating a new cell phone.
