Finding a Home for Heidi

On Monday, April 2, Heidi had exactly what she wanted for breakfast, and she fixed it herself. Unremarkable for most people but for the 71-year-old who was spending the first morning in a home of her own after four years in shelters, it was a miracle.

Originally from the Netherlands, Heidi came to the United States from Indonesia in the 1970s to study at Georgetown University. Things went well for decades. She took classes, worked as a translator and shared a house with friends. But an accident changed everything. Click here to read more.

Help the Environment and Our Shelter!

We are looking for individuals and groups to help. The Embry Rucker Community Shelter (ERCS) is experiencing erosion and ground flooding. Wetland Studies and Solutions volunteered a plan to alleviate these problems. To fully implement the plan we need gardeners to plant seeds and seedlings and to foster their growth this summer. These plants will be transplanted to the ERCS this fall. Click here for a list of the plants that are on our planting plan.

Please contact Susan Alger to discuss ways you can help. This would be a great project for families, scouts, garden clubs and others!
