greenandgracefulhouseGreen and Graceful Open House

Reston Interfaith Housing Corporation (RIHC) has renovated a significantly neglected townhouse, which was acquired as an affordable housing unit. A large eight member family who is on the brink of homelessness will rent the house and create a better life for themselves. Renovations were done to utilize and demonstrate the benefits of many environmentally friendly and energy efficient materials and technologies, while highlighting the benefits of setting up a home with a spacing and organizational plan. Join us on Wednesday, May 18 at 10am for the open house.

Shelter Families Enjoy a Spring Break Day Trip

Families from Embry Rucker Community Shelter had a rare treat during spring break. Children, their parents and staff took a fun and educational day trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore.  While there, everyone explored the exhibits, took in the Dolphin Show - complete with a new baby dolphin and experienced the 4-D movie "Planet Earth-Pole to Pole." Thanks to a government grant and the donation of transportation from U.S. Sedan Service of Sterling, Reston Interfaith was able to provide this wonderful enrichment experience for our clients.

Volunteer Highlight

Vadeandjanet

Vade and Janet Bolton have been volunteers with Reston Interfaith and the Embry Rucker Community Shelter since 1975.  Together, they've contributed more than 4,000 hours to Reston Interfaith, but that represents just a fraction of the time this couple gives to the organization and other worthy causes. In addition, the Boltons assist with the North County Hypothermia Prevention Program, which is open throughout the winter to offer a hot meal and warm place to spend the night for those who are homeless and have nowhere else to go. Vade and Janet are consistently supporting the program, taking the hard-to-fill shifts, like Christmas Eve.

Since his retirement 10 years ago, Vade has been a near constant presence at the shelter and he has served on the Board of Directors and as Reston Interfaith's chairman. The impact of their good work is best explained by one of the shelter clients. Asked to comment on their contributions, he was at first speechless. He thought a minute, shrugged and smiled. "It's just who they are.  They volunteer. They work to make a difference. They are here to help. It's just what they do. They are amazing people."
