*Resources to Keep Families Strong
Spring is a special time for families - many of us enjoyed Mother's Day celebrations on May 9 and are now planning for Father's Day on June 20. As we take time to tell our relatives how important they are, consider the resources that are needed to keep a family strong. When basic necessities are in question - such as food and shelter - parenting can take a backseat to keeping a roof overhead or putting food on the table. Reston Interfaith recognizes the importance of community support for parents and children in need. Read below to learn how our Healthy Families and transitional housing programs provide parents with critical resources to help their families thrive. Take the opportunity to get to know the vibrant moms, dads and children we serve each day by volunteering with us. We can't think of a better way to celebrate mothers and fathers than by providing families in need with support to keep them strong. |

*This Just In
Congratulations to Luella Brown, an inspirational woman served by Reston Interfaith, for being named 2009 Lady of Fairfax. Luella and her son, who participated in the Partnership for Permanent Housing, have come through many challenges and are on the verge of moving into a home they helped to build with Habitat for Humanity. Also honored as 2009 Lord of Fairfax is Verdia Haywood, former Fairfax County Deputy County Executive and Best of Reston Honoree. Click here to learn more about their well-deserved recognition. |
*Get to Know Our Healthy Families
Reston Interfaith participates in the nationally-accredited Healthy Families program, designed to promote positive childhood outcomes and minimize the risk of child abuse or neglect. Each year, our dedicated team of family support workers provides home-based support and education to approximately 600 first-time families of children up to five years old. Moms and dads learn about child health and nutrition, stress management and parenting skills. During our 2009 fiscal year, developmental delay screening was conducted with 98% of enrolled children, and when any child showed signs of delay, there was a referral rate of 100% to specialists and a 100% level of follow-through by parents and case managers. Kayla's story is one example of how Healthy Families makes a positive difference to parents and children in our community. Kayla is a 14-month old who was born with spina bifida. Her mother and father were referred to Healthy Families through the Fairfax County Health Department because they received a "high risk" score when screened for potential parenting challenges. Carmen, the family's support worker, began working closely with the parents to monitor Kayla's progress. She kept the mother and father connected to important medical resources, encouraged screenings and taught them appropriate activities to advance Kayla's development. The parents ultimately opted for their daughter to undergo surgery with the hope of improving her physical condition. Kayla has made an incredible recovery, and just began walking a few weeks ago. By participating in Healthy Families Fairfax, this family received ongoing support and critical resources that helped them achieve a wonderful outcome for their daughter. |
*Golf and Give Back This July
The 16th Annual Rucker Memorial Golf Tournament, 40th Anniversary Dinner and Auctions will be held on July 19, 2010 at the beautiful River Creek Country Club in Leesburg. There are many opportunities for golfers and non-golfers alike to support the tournament as sponsors and guests. We are also looking for items to include in the auctions and raffle, such as timeshares, weekend getaways, and local art. New this year is a golf clinic and dinner option for novice golfers with River Creek's club pros. Don't golf? Attend Reston Interfaith's 40th Anniversary Dinner and exciting live and silent auctions following the tournament to celebrate four decades of quality social services in our community. *Celebrating Transitional Housing Successes
Did you know that RI serves approximately 78 families each year through our transitional housing programs? Participants live in townhomes or apartments owned and managed by RI, and receive support from a team of caring case managers. The programs help families increase financial literacy, credit awareness and income while learning important skills to strengthen relationships with each other. You can help celebrate the 2009 - 2010 accomplishments of our client families by volunteering for the Transitional Housing End-of-Year Celebration on June 7 from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. Opportunities include leading arts and crafts activities with children, providing entertainment for families and making table centerpieces that attendees can take home following the event. For more information or to sign up, please contact Mandy Guernsey at 571.323.9565. |
