*A Note from Angela Harpalani, Vice Chair, Reston Interfaith Board of Directors
Angela Harpalani, seated, surrounded by fellow volunteers |
Being actively involved with an organization that serves people in need has always been one of my personal goals. My colleagues and acquaintances have often questioned my level of commitment to community service knowing the demands of my schedule. I respond by sharing my belief that because I have been given many resources, I have an opportunity and an obligation to help those who are less fortunate. I personally feel called to help the poor and hungry because I think it is important to look out for all of our neighbors in the Reston Herndon community, and especially those who are struggling to make ends meet. Every morning, I look in the mirror and try to mentally put myself in the position of a family going through a difficult time. I ask myself what would I do if I were only working part-time and my husband were suddenly laid off? What if we had three children and the youngest had health issues? We would have lost our health insurance and ability to pay rent along with my husband's job. Where would we turn for help? Click here to read the rest of Angela's message... |

*The "Best" Night Out In Reston
The 19th Annual Best of Reston Awards for Community Service, presented by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, took place on April 15, 2010. Nearly 700 guests enjoyed a meaningful celebration of dedicated community servants at the Hyatt Regency Reston. Through sponsorships, tables and donations, Best of Reston raised more than $295,000 to benefit Reston Interfaith in a time of growing need. The 2010 event tri-chairs, Lynn Gilmore of Northrop Grumman, Georgia Graves of Bridgman Communications, Inc. and Linda Mallison of SugarOak Commercial Real Estate worked tirelessly to raise support for Reston Interfaith's important social service work in our community. We are grateful for their efforts, and those of so many others, who helped to make this year's event the "best" night out in Reston. *A Successful Season of Hypothermia Prevention
Between December 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010, hundreds of volunteers worked nearly 2,000 hours at Reston Interfaith's North County Hypothermia Prevention Program. The program, designed to prevent weather-induced illness and loss of life among unsheltered adult men and women, has been in operation for the past four years in partnership with Fairfax County. Every day, volunteer groups provided nutritious meals and extended warmth through conversation with some of our most vulnerable neighbors. Supporters provided bagged meals for guests to take each morming, and conducted drives for essential items such as socks, tee shirts and toiletries. Still more volunteers helped Reston Interfaith staff clean and re-stock supplies and transport laundry throughout the season. Thanks to these efforts, 160 individuals accessed the Hypothermia Prevention Program in 2009 - 2010, giving them a safe environment to spend some of the coldest nights of the year. |

*Calling All Creative Kids: Enter the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Tee Shirt Contest
Reston Interfaith is a proud participant in Fannie Mae's Help the Homeless Program, which raises public awareness of homelessness while increasing resources for organizations - including RI - working to end homelessness in the Washington, D.C. area. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to participate in an art contest to select the design to be featured on the 2010 Help the Homeless Program tee shirt. The winning artwork will convey a positive message about the importance of having a home. This shirt will be distributed to more than 100,000 participants in the Help the Homeless Program, including the Reston Interfaith Community Walk, all area mini-walks and the 23rd Annual Fannie Mae Walkathon on the National Mall. The art is due by Friday, May 21, 2010. For specifics on how to participate, please contact Theresa Rupp at 571.323.9572. |
*Do You Have a Car to Help RI?
The families and individuals served by Reston Interfaith have a variety of needs - for food, financial assistance, and even transportation.
Do you own a car that you would like to give as a tax-deductible gift? We are in need of approximately 15 vehicles for families participating in Reston Interfaith's transitional housing program. Consider supporting your neighbors in need by giving them a reliable means of transportation. The vehicle must be clean and in excellent working condition with current Virginia safety and emissions inspection tags. In order to donate, you need to provide all paperwork for the vehicle, including the title signed over to Reston Interfaith. For more information, please contact Theresa Rupp at 571.323.9572. To make a financial donation, click here or return this form via mail or fax. Thank you for your generous support. |
