Holiday Greetings from Board Chair Al Groff
As 2009 draws to a close, Reston Interfaith not only completes another year of supportive service to the community, but also begins its 40th anniversary celebration. This dynamic nonprofit has come a long way since its founding in 1970 by a caring core of volunteers. It has grown to become a substantial organization responsible for an ever-changing list of needs in our community, especially in these difficult times. RI's work to help people regain and maintain self-sufficiency is possible as a result of each generous act or gift shared by our community. I like to look at it as the result of a positive math problem: people or organizations learn about RI, then choose to get involved, and thus continue the care that helps thousands of people each year get back on their feet. Passion plus action equals positive change for all involved. As Chairman of the Board, I would like to share a few reasons why I support RI, especially on the eve of its 40th anniversary. I am especially passionate about RI's programs that work to prevent and end homelessness. The Embry Rucker Community Shelter provides 70 beds for single adults and families with children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 52 weeks a year. Not only do families and individuals have a place to stay in case of personal emergency, but they also receive specialized care through the newly implemented Housing Opportunity Support Team (HOST) model of shelter services. During the winter, RI will not turn anyone away from the shelter, so anyone in need gets a place to sleep each night. They also operate the North County Hypothermia Prevention Program, which saw tremendous community participation in 2008-2009. Over 291 volunteers and 15 faith communities shared 1,831 volunteer hours to serve 163 program guests between December and March. With winter now upon us, the Hypothermia Prevention Program is up and running again. We expect it will be a very cold season in a time of deep economic trouble. In these and many other ways, Reston Interfaith plays a vital role in the well-being of our community. There is a way for all of us to get involved in helping our neighbors, whether as volunteers or donors to support our clients' needs. Please join us in celebrating 40 years of caring and successful social service in Northern Virginia. If you aren't already, you can become a part of the vibrant combination of individuals, faith groups, organizations and corporations that provide vital support to our mission, which in turn is so vital to the overall health of our community. On behalf of Reston Interfaith, I would like to wish you a Happy New Year. |

Community Steps Up for Most Successful Holiday Drives Yet
While many had to scale back their holiday gift lists this year due to a down economy, the needs of RI's families were more than met through our annual holiday drives. Both the Thanksgiving and Adopt-a-Family drives signed up record numbers of families in need, and also received the most donations to date in the history of RI's drives.
Click the picture to the left to view a photo slideshow of RI's 2009 Holiday Drives! The Thanksgiving Holiday Food Drive, which took place in November, distributed well over 2,000 boxes of food to over 800 families in need. RI received a special donation from an anonymous Reston donor via Feed the Children, an international, nonprofit relief organization that delivers food, medicine, clothing and other necessities to individuals, children and families who lack these essentials. This gift, delivered in a semi-truck filled with kits for 400 families, ensured that each household received not only healthy food but personal care items as well. We wrapped up the Adopt-a-Family Gift Drive during the third week of December. Although the snowstorm caused a delay in plans to distribute gifts for approximately 1,800 children, our fantastic volunteers demonstrated their flexibility and commitment to ensuring that each child received his or her personalized gifts in time for Christmas. In addition to providing presents for children, we also received heartwarming items for area senior citizens and parents, such as home-made blankets, scarves, and gloves.
Reston Interfaith is grateful to the many individuals, organizations, and companies that donated their energy and resources to help make the holiday season fulfilling and memorable for our neighbors struggling to make ends meet. |
