Happy Thanksgiving from CEO Kerrie Wilson
This has been one of those weeks that fills me with gratitude for our community. I wish that I could share stories about every singe person or organization that supports Reston Interfaith, but I would like to highlight just a few Thanksgiving gifts that we received this past week. On Monday and Tuesday, we received colorful boxes of Thanksgiving food from students at Sunrise Valley Elementary School. On Wednesday, the UPS Store at South Lakes and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, through their Literacy Program, gave thousands of brand-new children's books to RI and Fairfax County Public Schools, which we will distribute to area kids in need. On Thursday, we kicked off our annual Thanksgiving Holiday Food Drive, and began collecting boxes of holiday food that will be shared with over 800 families struggling to make ends meet. Today, we were given a semi-truck loaded with food and personal care items by an anonymous donor through Feed the Children, a national nonprofit organization that delivers food and other necessities to those who lack essentials due to poverty and other causes.

Every day of this week I was overwhelmed with thankfulness for each of these precious acts. Children, adults, students, employees, Girl and Boy Scouts, volunteers, and teachers - both through large and small gifts - demonstrated their willingness to lend a helping hand in order to make the holidays a joyful time for all of our neighbors. Tomorrow, I am excited to finish this amazing week by walking with my colleagues and friends at Fannie Mae's Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall. I hope that you will join me in taking steps to ensure that nobody in our community is without a place to call home.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving with our loved ones next week, please know how thankful Reston Interfaith is to you, every day of every year, as you generously share your time and resources with the people that we serve. We would like to wish each of you a very Happy Thanksgiving.
How We Are Thankful
We asked families and kids that participate in a variety of Reston Interfaith's programs how they will celebrate Thanksgiving on November 26 and what they are thankful for
this year. Our staff is thankful to be able to serve such special and hard-working people every day, and would like to wish the entire community a Happy Thanksgiving!

Cedar Ridge Community Center
"While we don't traditionally celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, my family will enjoy having some extra time to spend with each other because we are normally very busy with work. We are especially thankful to be living in the United States because we have the freedom of religion in America. It does not matter what you believe, you are free to worship how you please in America. That is not the case in many places around the world." - The Saleh Family

Embry Rucker Community Shelter
"I am excited about the big feast that will be prepared at the Shelter on the night of Thanksgiving-my friends and I are going to eat lots of turkey, pie and sweet potatoes. The day before I am not eating a lot, but on Thanksgiving I am going eat everything! I am thankful for my family and the fact that we get to celebrate Thanksgiving all together." - Jackie, 13 years old

Emergency Self-Sufficiency Program
"Our family is originally from Mexico, so we celebrate Thanksgiving by eating a turkey filled with vegetables and rice on the side, and drinking Ponche-a hot drink made with apples, cinnamon, pomegranate and raisins-as well as fruit juice, like pineapple and orange. Our children were born here in the United States and want to celebrate the "American" Thanksgiving so we add in some treats from our culture too. We like this holiday because it is a good time for family reunion and being together, and also celebrating all the good things that happened for us during the year." - The Salazar Family

Laurel Learning Center
"I will spend Thanksgiving with my family. We eat turkey, rice, and sometimes mashed potatoes.  After we have dinner together we watch movies. I am thankful for my school, my family, and my new house." - Myles, 8 years old

Walk With Us on Saturday and Make a Difference
A walker holding a sign that says "Homelessness Hurts All of Us."Fairfax County has the largest homeless population in the entire D.C.-meotrpolitan area, outside of the District itself. Help us turn this trend around by walking with Reston Interfaith in Fannie Mae's 22nd Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall this Saturday, November 21. This is an easy and fun way for you and your friends, family, and colleagues to show your support for ending homelessness in our community while enjoying the beautiful fall weather in our Nation's capitol. Registration opens at 7:30 am, and our team will meet under the "R" sign at 8:30 am just in time for the walk to begin at 9:00 am.

Register at the walk on Saturday - be sure to select RI as your beneficiary (code VA035). The fees are $15 for youth (25 years and under) and $30 per adult. 100% of the registration fees go to RI. Please note that in order to be counted as a walker for RI, you must check in at the walk on the 21st. For more information please contact Cathy Hoskinson at 571.323.9566. With your support, we can walk towards a brighter future for our neighbors in need.

Holiday Helpers at RIHelping Your Neighbors for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we are well-prepared to distribute holiday food boxes to over 800 families this upcoming weekend. Despite the economic difficulties of the past year, our community has risen to the challenge of serving the largest number of clients in need in the history of our Thanksgiving drive. RI would like to thank the many local residents and businesses who, through their generosity, have ensured that no family will go without a healthy and delicious meal on November 26.  Additionally, we would like to thank St. John Neumann Catholic Church for once again providing a large and central location for our food collection.

Our annual Adopt-a-Family Holiday Drive is also well underway, but we still need your help to make it a success. This year, we have over 1,800 children signed up to receive gifts - over 200 more than last year. If you are interested in adopting a family or child this year, please contact Theresa Rupp at 571.323.9572, or go to our website and click on "Holiday Drives" under the Events tab. You can also volunteer to sort and organize holiday gifts. To sign up, please contact Mandy Guernsey at 571.323.9565 for more information.
