SiO2 Medical Products to Create 300 High-Tech Jobs in Auburn
Auburn, Ala. - Governor Robert Bentley on Tuesday announced SiO2 Medical Products is investing $90 million in a new facility in Auburn, adding up to 300 new jobs in Lee County.
Construction of the SiO2 Medical Products plant is currently underway at Auburn Technology Park West. SiO2 Medical Products will supply the medical industry with innovative products for the biological drugs industry. The company's products and related processes are protected by 37 patents worldwide.
SiO2's roots in Auburn date back to 1994.
"An essential part of creating new jobs is encouraging our existing companies to further their investments in this state," Governor Bentley said. "SiO2 Medical Products is creating new opportunities in the form of additional well-paying jobs, and we appreciate their continued commitment to Alabama."
"We offer a highly-skilled workforce with an excellent work ethic," Governor Bentley added. "And we look forward to even more announcements from SiO2 in the future."
Alabama Development Office Director Greg Canfield thanked the company for the confidence it has shown in the City of Auburn.
"This project has tremendous growth opportunities, and I anticipate future expansions of this company in Auburn," Canfield said. "This is incredible news for the area."

Alabama entrepreneurial activity inches up

The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity said Alabama had slightly more entrepreneurial activity in 2011 than it did in 2010, when it recorded 250 entrepreneurs for every 100,000 people.
Alabama's rate of entrepreneurship ranked in the middle of the pack nationally. Among the state's neighbors, Florida (380), Georgia (350) and Tennessee (290) finished ahead of Alabama. Mississippi (260) scored the same as Alabama.
Nationally, entrepreneurial activity decreased slightly in 2011. The national average is 320 entrepreneurs per 100,000 residents.

Alabama ranks 10th in growth of women-owned firms

Alabama ranked No. 10 in the nation for growth in the number of women-owned businesses over the past 15 years, according to a new report.
OPEN's State of Women-Owned Businesses Report said the number of women-owned firms in Alabama grew 67 percent to 116,300 in 2012 from 69,515 in 1997.
Revenue at the state's women-owned businesses grew 56.7 percent during that period of time. In 1997, women-owned firms in Alabama recorded $10.2 billion in revenue. In 2012, revenue totaled $16 billion.
That 56.7 percent increase ranked No. 32 in the nation.
