GE Announces Jet Engine Coatings Facility Locating in Alabama

MONTGOMERY -- GE Aviation will create an environmental coatings facility for advanced military jet engine components in Alabama.
Governor Bob Riley, GE Aviation President & CEO David Joyce, and Alabama Development Office (ADO) officials made the announcement today during a ceremony in the Alabama State Capital.
GE Aviation, a GE operating unit based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a world-leading provider of commercial and military jet engines and components as well as integrated digital, electric power, and mechanical systems for aircraft.
Working closely with ADO officials, GE Aviation is in the final stages of selecting a location for creating an Environmental Coatings Center of Excellence. It will enhance components for the GE Rolls-Royce F136 jet engine for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) F-35 program.
The JSF F-35, the largest military procurement in U.S. history, is a multi-role aircraft to replace numerous tactical fighter aircraft flying today. Potential F-35 production for the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines and international customers is expected to reach more than 5,000 aircraft over 30 years.
The GE/Rolls-Royce F136 engine, currently in development test and preparing for flight test next year, is among the most advanced jet engines ever created. Environmental coatings are key to enhancing the performance and durability of its components. They protect the base metal on components from harsh thermal and corrosive environments.
The F136 engine is a product of the best technology from two world-leading propulsion companies, GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce. F136 engine development is being led at GE Aviation in Cincinnati, Ohio; and at Rolls-Royce in Indianapolis, Indiana.
GE Aviation's new Alabama facility, which will be approximately 200,000 square feet, is expected to open in the 2011-2012 timeframe to support an initial F136 production beginning in 2013. The facility is expected to employ 300-400 people when the engine ramps up to full rate production later this decade.
"We are deeply gratified by the tremendous support received from Gov. Bob Riley and his whole team at the ADO," said David Joyce, president & CEO of GE Aviation. "The F136 engine is a very long-term program, with production anticipated for decades. We are thrilled to make Alabama part of our advanced technology network, and to commit to high-technology jobs for the state."
"Alabama welcomes GE Aviation and the high-tech jobs it is bringing to our state with this new facility," said Governor Riley. "This is a project we have aggressively pursued and we're proud this prestigious international company is coming to Alabama. Our state is seeing amazing growth in aviation and aerospace jobs and it's great to see this progress is continuing."
Due to anticipated F136 production volume, GE's need for developing environmental coatings and associated manufacturing processes continues to grow. The technology requires a highly skilled and flexible workforce, and it will create meaningful collaborative opportunities for Alabama's university system.
Given the long-term potential for the F136 program, GE Aviation will host a supplier symposium in late September to assist small companies in Alabama desiring to do business with GE. The Alabama Development Office and the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics have teamed with GE Aviation to organize the event.
While GE Aviation today is committing to its first operation in Alabama, the larger GE already has a significant presence in the state. GE has 1,600 employees in Alabama through its GE Enterprise Solutions operation in Huntsville and GE appliances plant in Decatur.
GE Aviation generated revenues of $18.7 billion in 2009. The company also has the largest and fastest-growing installed base of jet engines in commercial aviation and a global services network to support them.
GE Aviation employs approximately 38,000 employees and operates more than 50 manufacturing and service facilities around the world. The company invests $1 billion annually in jet propulsion R&D programs. This long tradition of commitment to new technology has helped GE establish its leadership position in the industry with a proud list of "firsts" in both the military and commercial jet propulsion, tracing back to 1942 with America's first jet engine.
Created by Thomas Edison, GE (NYSE: GE) is a diversified infrastructure, finance and media company taking on the world's toughest challenges. From aircraft engines and power generation to financial services, health care solutions, and television programming, GE operates in more than 100 countries and employs about 300,000 people worldwide.

Witt Heat Transfer Products Group announced Monday it will expand its facilities in Scottsboro.

The company, which makes commercial refrigeration units, coolers, evaporators, condensing units and a variety of products for the heat transfer industry, anticipates adding as many as 200 jobs at its location in the Scottsboro Industrial Park over the next three years.

"We've gotten some really good news today," Goodrich "Dus" Rogers, President and CEO of the Jackson County Economic Development Authority said. "The company will relocate its headquarters from Brea, California to Scottsboro."

Rogers said some people will move to the area as part of the headquarters division. The other jobs will be added to the company's established manufacturing workforce of 319 employees. Administration and some service functions will remain in Brea, according to a company spokesperson.

"We're excited to know that this is coming about," Scottsboro Mayor Melton Potter said. "We've worked on this for 18 months and to go with the news we got Friday at the TVA Board meeting in Knoxville it's a pretty big couple of days."

CVS Caremark closing mail-order pharmacy, eliminating 400 jobs
Published: Wednesday, August 25, 2010, 12:42 PM     Updated: Wednesday, August 25, 2010, 12:49 PM
Russell Hubbard -- The Birmingham News
CVS Caremark has told about 400 workers they will lose their jobs in October when the company closes a mail-order pharmacy in Birmingham.

"We continually review our operational strategies, and the decision to discontinue mail operations at this site was made after careful consideration," a Caremark spokeswoman said today in an e-mailed statement.

The company said it plans to close the location at 2700 Milan Court on Oct. 29. A few workers will be retained for a temporary telephone and clinical support jobs, the company said.

Workers will be eligible to apply for other jobs within the Nashville-based company, which has operations nationwide. Severance pay and help with finding a new job will be available, CVS Caremark said.

The operation that is closing is a mail-order pharmacy from which CVS Caremark supplies prescription drugs to customers who elect to not go to a retail store, or whose drug plan mandates automated postal refills, which the industry says saves money.

The pharmacy started out as an operation of drug giant Eli Lilly & Co. and was later acquired by CVS Caremark.

Volkswagen reaches 1,000th employee milestone for Chattanooga auto plant
Published: Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 2:45 PM     Updated: Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 3:06 PM
Dawn Kent -- The Birmingham News
Germany's Volkswagen has reached a key milestone in the hiring process for its new Chattanooga auto assembly plant.

The current orientation class of new employees includes the 1,000th worker to be hired for the operation, which is set to begin production in the first quarter of 2011.

Alabama competed for the plant in 2008 but lost to Tennessee. Economic developers in both states, however, have been trying to lure suppliers for the plant, since Chattanooga is close to the state line.

The Volkswagen plant will employ more than 2,000 workers who will build a new mid-size sedan. Hiring will continue through 2011 as the plant reaches full production.

The work force now stands at 1,016, including 324 production workers from Hamilton County, Tenn.

"Volkswagen is very excited that we are on time and on schedule as planned in our hiring process," Hans-Herbert Jagla, executive vice president of human resources, said in a prepared statement.

Birmingham Business Alliance offers bid reporting service begins for members
Published: Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 10:05 AM
Roy L. Williams -- The Birmingham News

The Birmingham Business Alliance on Monday began offering to members a daily look at all sorts of projects up for bid -- a service officials say could help area businesses capture millions of dollars in contracts.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Birmingham- based Regions Bank, all BBA members in good standing began receiving what the organization calls the "Regional RFP Report" Monday. RFP stands for "request for proposals."

The report is compiled by Onvia, a Seattle company that is considered a national leader in bid research services, said Tom Cosby, the BBA's vice president of investor relations. Cosby said the Onvia report normally costs $2,200 a year for each recipient, but is being provided at no cost for BBA members.

The report lists construction projects, services and products up for bid by companies across the country. Birmingham area businesses soliciting bids can also use the report to get word out about their needs, he said.

"In this down economy where so many businesses need extra work, this is potentially a huge benefit, especially for smaller companies who don't have the staff to go out and research information on projects up for bid," Cosby said.

Mercedes puts workers on road to good health
Published: Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 5:30 AM
Dawn Kent -- The Birmingham News
There's a little tinkering going on under the hood at Alabama's Mercedes-Benz auto factory, and it has nothing to do with the luxury SUVs built there.

Employees are eating better, exercising more and setting ambitious physical fitness goals for the coming year, all part of a new push to promote healthy living among the 2,800-member work force.

Changes include a wider selection of healthier foods in the plant's cafeteria, with nutritional information posted for the daily options. Signs have also gone up outside the plant, marking walking trails that can be used on lunch breaks.

And on the horizon: Employees are being encouraged to participate in the annual Mercedes Marathon, a weekend of running activities the company sponsors in downtown Birmingham. The 2011 races, set for Feb. 11 to 13, will mark the event's 10th anniversary.

Cullman Yutaka Technology honored by Honda
By Trent Moore The Cullman Times

Despite the sluggish economy, Alabama Cullman Yutaka Technology (ACYT) has managed to thrive since opening in 2008 - and the company was honored for that perseverance with a prestigious supplier award from Honda Manufacturing of Alabama this week.

ACYT manufactures torque convertors, exhaust systems, catalytic converters and other products for Honda Manufacturing of Alabama. The company is currently in the midst of three minor expansions, which are expected to create at least a dozen new jobs.

The honor the company received, a Honda supplier delivery performance award, was only given to 53 of the automobile manufacturer's 600 suppliers. To receive the award, ACYT had to demonstrate a spotless delivery record.

POPSCI.comBuilding rockets makes the University of Alabama in Huntsville one of the nation's coolest schools, according to a magazine.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The University of Alabama in Huntsville got a pat on the back fitting for a school in a town dubbed "The Rocket City."
UAH was mentioned by POPSCI -- the online version of Popular Science magazine -- in its coolest schools. Specifically, UAH was ranked No. 3 in "POPSCI'S awesome lab ranking."
The lab was the Propulsion Research Center, which could translate into a career as a rocket scientist, the website said.
In the lab, the website said, students "learn to make things go very far and very fast."
UAH students built a 37 pound, 8.5 foot long carbon fiber projectile with advanced data-collection systems onboard. It is designed to launch to a height of 5,280 feet -- exactly one mile into the air. They also present a report on the rocket to NASA as if competing for a contract, though it's just an academic exercise.
