EADS North America to submit KC-X tanker proposal today

EADS North America said today it will submit its proposal in the U.S. Air Force's KC-X aerial refueling tanker competition, a day ahead of today's deadline.
The KC-45 tanker, based on the commercial A330, will be assembled in a manufacturing facility to be built in Mobile, which will also produce Airbus commercial freighter aircraft - more than doubling the aircraft production that the tanker would bring, the company said in a statement.
"We're also pleased that our significant industrial investment will provide an economic boost to the struggling Gulf Coast region," said EADS North America Chairman Ralph Crosby.
The company said its proposal is more than 8,800 pages and the tanker will be built in the U.S. by 48,000 Americans and a supplier base of more than 200 U.S. companies.
"We're proud of our offering, which is the only one in this competition that is flying and refuelling today, including a full array of receiver aircraft," said Crosby. "The Air Force will select the tanker that best meets the American warfighters' requirements. We are anxious to conclude the acquisition process and are confident in the superior capabilities of the KC-45."

Sitel to close Birmingham office, eliminate 432 jobs
Published: Thursday, July 08, 2010, 8:30 AM
Roy L. Williams -- The Birmingham News
Nashville-based Sitel -- which calls itself as the world's largest call center outsourcing company -- informed Alabama officials that it plans to close the office at 5338 Oporto Madrid Blvd. on Aug. 30.
Sitel entered the Birmingham market in 1997 and in its heyday employed 700 people at the site in the Village East Shopping Center.
Sitel spokesman Andrew Kokes said employees were given eight-weeks' advance notice to give them as much time as possible to prepare for the loss of their jobs.
"We have been an active part of the Birmingham business community for a number of years, so the decision to close our site here does not come easy," Kokes said in a statement. "This closure is due to the changing business needs of our clients and is in no way reflective of the quality of customer care provided by our associates."

Intergraph agrees to be acquired by Swedish technology company Hexagon AB
Published: Thursday, July 08, 2010, 7:04 AM     Updated: Thursday, July 08, 2010, 7:08 AM
Marian Accardi, The Huntsville Times
HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Intergraph, one of Huntsville's oldest technology companies, is changing hands once again.

The company announced Wednesday it agreed to be acquired by Hexagon AB, a Swedish technology company, for $2.1 billion.

R. Halsey Wise, Intergraph's chair, president and CEO who took over in 2003, said it will still be "business as usual" at Intergraph. The company will remain a separate division within Hexagon when the deal is completed, retaining the Intergraph name.

"The division headquarters will remain in Huntsville," Wise said. "This is a tribute to the success of the people of Intergraph and our transformation mission over the last seven years. We're more relevant now than we have been."

MOBILE, Ala. -- Austal USA will hold a keel-laying ceremony July 22 for its first Joint High-Speed Vessel.
The keel is the beam that runs down the center of a ship. Laying it is traditionally viewed as the first step of the shipbuilding process.
The ceremony for the vessel -- to be named Spearhead -- will be at Austal's shipyard on Mobile River across from downtown.
The company is one of the Mobile area's largest employers, with nearly 1,500 workers.
The 103-meter, high-speed military transport ferry will carry military equipment -- including vehicles and a helicopter -- and troops at speeds of up to 43 knots. Austal was selected as the prime contractor on the project in November 2008, and has received money for four more ships. Altogether, the U.S. Navy and Army are expected to spend $1.6 billion on 10 of the ships by 2013.

ThyssenKrupp carbon steel unit hits 1,000 employees at Calvert, Ala., complex
Published: Wednesday, July 07, 2010, 10:22 AM     Updated: Wednesday, July 07, 2010, 11:28 AM

CALVERT, Ala -- There was no banner, no balloon and no prize for worker No. 1,000 at ThyssenKrupp's carbon steel unit. In fact, there isn't even a worker who carries that designation.

Scott Posey, a spokesman for the carbon steel unit at the Calvert complex, said that among a group of 32 people who started their jobs last week was the thousandth person hired by the unit.
The overall ThyssenKrupp complex, including a sister stainless steel operation, passed the 1,000 mark earlier this spring and now has close to 1,250 employees.
Carbon steel, the larger of two units at the $5 billion project being built on the Mobile-Washington county line, is only weeks away from the start of operations. Officials plan to fire up the furnace and make the first coil of steel sometime late this month.
The company hired at a furious pace for much of the spring, often taking on more than 100 people a month. Posey said that pace has now slowed to between 30 and 50 new workers a month. The unit expects to keep hiring at that rate until it reaches full employment of 1,700 sometime next year, Posey said.

Company to build distribution center in Prattville
July 6, 2010

PRATTVILLE - An Illinois-based medical supply company is going to build a 350,000-square-foot distribution center in Prattville, creating 35 to 40 jobs.
Mayor Jim Byard Jr. made the announcement just before Tuesday night's City Council meeting. Medline Industries Inc., headquartered in Mundelein, Ill., will build the $12.5 million facility in the city's South Industrial Park.
"I am pleased that this nationally known medical supply provider has chosen Prattville," Byard said. "In these tough economic times, it is great news to be adding 40 professional jobs to our region."
Founded in 1966, Medline has grown to become the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of health-care supplies and services, according to the company's website. Medline provides products and services for the entire medical field, including hospitals, extended-care facilities, surgery centers, commercial laundries, home-care dealers, home-care agencies, physician offices and other alternate-care sites. The company has 6,800 employees, including a sales force of 800.
Construction is set to begin "in the next few months," Byard said.

Yutaka eyeing third expansion
Adding at least 15 jobs, new torque converter tech
By Trent Moore The Cullman Times
CULLMAN - The addition of approximately $4.6 million in new equipment at Alabama Cullman Yutaka Technology (ACYT) should bring at least 15 new jobs to the area this year.

The expansion, the third in the past six months, will add additional equipment to meet a more diverse product demand.

Yutaka manufactures torque convertors, exhaust systems, catalytic converters and other products for Honda Manufacturing of Alabama.

Considering the current economic malaise, Cullman Economic Development Director Peggy Smith said the company's success represents a bright spot in a somewhat dreary economic picture.

"Yutaka is thriving and one of the few industries doing extremely well while we emerge from this tough recession," Smith said. "We are proud to have Yutaka as a member of Cullman's industrial family and look forward to their new product development."

More jobs for Decatur?
AlphaPET considers expansion
By Eric Fleischauer
Staff Writer

A proposed $12 million expansion of AlphaPET's Finley Island Road plant would reduce its dependency on oil, reduce its carbon footprint and reduce pollution, a company official said Wednesday.
The manufacturer of the main ingredient used in clear plastic bottles, AlphaPET, in June completed construction of its $193 million plant. It employs 103 workers in its two lines.
The expansion would give the company the ability to recycle used water bottles, shredded into plastic flakes, into the PET resin needed for new bottles. It would add 12 workers to the company, increasing its annual payroll - exclusive of benefits - to $5 million.
Asheville vs. Decatur
Plant Manager Yash Awasthi told the Decatur Industrial Development Board that AlphaPET's parent company has not decided whether to build the expansion in Decatur or in an Asheville, N.C., plant. The parent company, Taiwan-based Indorama Ventures Public Co. Limited, is the largest PET producer in the world.
The Decatur plant produces 1 billion pounds of PET a year, making it the largest producer in North America.
The IDB unanimously approved AlphaPET's requested tax abatements. The abatements would reduce state sales and use taxes by $205,000 during construction, IDB attorney Barney Lovelace said. The board's action would abate Morgan County non-educational property taxes by $276,000 over 10 years.

Council to prepare 117-acre site for potential industry
by BRANDON FINCHER
Jul 06, 2010 | 388 views | 0  | 2  |  |
CHILDERSBURG - The City Council approved steps to go forward with preparing a 117-acre site for prospective industry at the Coosa Industrial Park at its Tuesday meeting.

The council approved the authorization to solicit bids to cut the timber and clear the land at the designated site near the entrance of the park.

It also unanimously approved allowing the mayor to execute an agreement for soil exploration required at the site. The cost for this comes to just under $20,000. Mayor B.J. Meeks said Alabama Power and the Talladega County Economic Development Authority are sharing in the expense for the soil work.

Meeks said the city and the Childersburg Local Redevelopment Authority are working with Alabama Power and the TCEDA in the development of the site. Meeks said the work on this site at the park is being done so it can be shown to potential companies looking to locate in the area and will allow a company to move in and build quickly.

He hopes the land preparation work will be complete by September. The Coosa Industrial Park is in the midst of major renovations and improvements to attract more industry to the park on Plant Road.

The council also discussed upcoming repairs that would have to be made on some of the city's streets that had been recently resurfaced.

Regional EDA makes change
Posted on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 at 7:01 pm.
By Adam Prestridge

Investors will have a greater say in the work of the newly organized Coastal Gateway Economic Development Alliance, but the mission of the five-county economic development organization remains the same, board members said.
Chip Haringan of Fulton Logging Company, who was elected as the interim chairman during the alliance's first board meeting at BankTrust in Monroeville last week, said that the alliance's main mission is to draw business and industry to Escambia, Monroe, Conecuh, Clarke and Choctaw counties.
"Cosmetically, there are not many changes, but structurally, there are significant changes," Harrigan said last week. "It's actually a different type of organization."
The old Coastal Gateway Economic Development Authority was a "quasi governmental" body whose board was appointed by each county commission, with three members per county, Harrigan said.
"That structure has changed," Harrigan said. "We've embarked on our second five-year fundraising campaign, and as part of that fundraising campaign, we hired a fundraising group that went out and interviewed about 60-70 of our investors and asked for their input on how they felt like the organization could be improved."
During their efforts, the newly developed alliance was able to start with $1.255 million in secured pledges.
