Greetings! It was great to catch up with members and friends throughout our Open Day on August 27. BodyTech Gym Genie was a vision in blue, granting wishes to those willing to "do a few situps, pushups, etc.," to win a prize or two. Thanks to Mozaik Caffé, New Balance, Hubbards and Personal Trainers for the spot prizes. Our Fat2Muscle table was buzzing with many of you enquiring about the benefits of muscle during fat loss, especially now that we are coming up to the warmer months ahead. There is limited availability for the 6 week program, so if you are interested in getting your body "beach ready" please either call us or stop by to meet with a Membership Coordinator. We all enjoyed the lunch from Mozaik Caffé across the courtyard, and the delectable organic fruit from Pure Fresh Organic. We also drew the winner for the Te Whau Lodge grand prize, more details in this newsletter. The BodyTech Team

As MedFit Director, Rachel Mahoney, 31, brings a wealth of personal, professional and medical experience to her role.
Former golfer who played for Auckland with a 2 handicap, Rachel has always been keen on sport and so when she began working at BodyTech in 1999 (age 19) it was no surprise to see her move up to Manager and Personal Trainer.
In 2004, Rachel qualified as an osteopath and this year she has just completed her post graduate certificate in Health Sciences in Sports Medicine through the University of Auckland. She has also lived through chronic pain and a major back injury which led to surgery in 2008 (a fusion and disc replacement), followed by another 12 months of rehabilitation.
"It was only after my back injury that I identified the kind of client I loved working with," says Rachel. "The more medically complicated, the better and the more challenging the medical history the more satisfying for me because of the positive results we can achieve with the client."
Take for example someone with a back injury history who is exercising but is aggravating their pain. Through consultation, MedFit is often able to prescribe a programme that doesn't aggravate the injury and still works towards fulfilling their fitness goals. Rachel says it is often the little things that make a difference, such as how someone weight bears through their feet whilst doing leg exercises.
"My back was a three year ordeal and one of the things that made me better able to get through it was that I was fit and exercised through the whole process." Rachel says at her last check up, her surgeon said she was one of the best results he'd ever had. "I am now able to play squash, golf and cycle despite initially never being promised to be able to do any of these again."
Another component that is often overlooked is the psychology of pain and how it affects someone. "People often think something is going to hurt and I can safely guide them through stepping out of their comfort zone. Or in some cases, tell them that they have done enough! Whether it is back injury, shoulder or knees, I have been through chronic pain so I understand it - how it can play with your head."
MedFit offers Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, and specialised Personal Training services at Nugent Street and Ascot. Rachel is joined by Cushla Story who practices Osteopathy at Nugent Street and Chris Edwards, our Physiotherapist at both Nugent Street and Ascot. As of October 1st, Rachel will also be practicing Osteopathy, primarily at our Ascot facility, where she is responsible for the day to day operations. Rachel and Cushla also combine their extensive Personal Training experience to offer the specialised Personal Training services.
Available to both members and non-members, the initial MedFit Personal Training consultation is usually an hour long. It includes a medical and exercise history and a tailored exercise programme given not only your limitations but also your health and fitness goals. This session fee is $135. Depending on your needs, follow-up sessions may be indicated at a cost of $95. These are usually 30 minutes' duration.
Osteopathic consultations are $80 (ACC co-payment $50) and Physiotherapy $60 (ACC co-payment $20).

With summer approaching you may be getting back into exercise after a break.
If you have had a change in your health status (diagnosed with high blood pressure, undiagnosed chest pain or angina, stroke, heart attack, new injury / pain, recent surgery, etc) then please consult with our staff before resuming an exercise programme. We may ask you to speak to your doctor for recommendations to ensure the exercise programme we provide you with is safe and effective.

Labour Day Closure - A reminder that all BodyTech gyms will be closed on Labour Day, October 24.We are pretty confident that we will be still celebrating the All Blacks bringing home the Cup! Go the AB's! Iroko Wooden Benches For Sale - Some of our members have expressed interest in purchasing our beautiful Iroko Benches from our old premises. The original craftsmen of these benches have fully refurbished them to a brand new status by sanding, repairing and applying a final refinish. We have a total of six benches measuring 280mm deep and 3000mm long, and a further two measuring the same depths and length but standing at 1200 high. The latter were used as buffet/displays tables. Furthermore the manufacturer has informed us that the Iroko timber is in short supply and high demand. If you are interested in these benches please email jan@bodytech.co.nz or peter@bodytech.co.nz. Locker Room Floors - Nugent Street has had an "anti-slip" surface applied to the floors in the changing room areas. This will lessen the chance of any slippage, however please be mindful that the showers are tiled and do not have the anti-slip applied. Gym Etiquette - In the interest of all members, we offer a gentle reminder to vacate the machines promptly when you have finished your sets. If you need a few minutes between machines to rest or mix up your iPod playlists, please do this away from the machines to allow the next member access. We also ask that you do not place your iPod or towel onto another machine whilst still using one to reserve it. Both of these issues have been brought to our attention and are causing some frustration especially at busy peak times. Thank you for your consideration. As the weather warms up and as a courtesy to your fellow members, please remember to wipe down your exercise machines post use with hand towels and spray bottles provided. Don't forget to bring your own sweat towels. For hygiene reasons - a reminder to please shower before entering the swimming pool. We value your feedback if this is not happening. |
