All it takes
"I could not have
summited Mt. Aspiring without the support of BodyTech." This March, BodyTech member Margie Blackwood visited
the Southern Alps for a 3 week mountaineering trip which culminated in a successful
climb of Mt. Aspiring - 'Tititea' in Maori (the glistening peak) and sometimes
referred to the "Matterhorn of the South", Mt. Aspiring is just over 3000 metres
high.
"I have always been passionate about mountains
and love being in them - they are so beautiful, dominating, aloof and demanding
of respect. Until 3 years ago, I had confined myself to an annual South Island
tramp, typically spending 1 to 2 days climbing. Typically, I would sit at the top of my climb, and soak in the view of the mountains for an
hour or two before descending." "My inability to get above the tree line
became increasingly unsatisfying and frustrating and led me to contact Alpine
Recreation to book a guided trip over Ball Pass next to Mt Cook. The
required standard of fitness was 'high'. I talked it over with BodyTech Personal Trainer, Rod Wonglyn, who did some
investigating of his own and came up with a programme for me. The preparation
started.
The trip was fantastic; challenging but
rewarding with lots of learning - a little bit scary at times but mostly lots
of fun. I had a taste of mountaineering and knew this was what I was looking
for." "Things have progressed for me since that
first trip. Last year, I emailed Alpine Recreation describing my 'dream trek':
to go above the bush/tree line for several days. In addition I floated my idea
of climbing Mt. Aspiring." "Another development was that my friend Debra
Charteris, also a BodyTech member who trains with Rod, joined both last year's
and this year's trips and we had a great time with amazing weather on both
occasions." "Alpine Recreation's guide, Andrew Finnigan,
thought I would be capable of climbing Mt. Aspiring as long as I was fit
enough. So this year, after 3
months' intensive training with Rod in conjunction with my own preparation, followed
by spending 10 days learning more skills and climbing around Mt Cook with Debs,
Andrew and I went over to Mt. Aspiring National Park, via Wanaka." "During the next 5 days we covered long
distances with heavy packs over rough and very steep rock and ice. Two days
were spent walking up the beautiful Matukituki Valley across open farm land and
beech forest flats, climbing The Gut beyond the head of the valley to Bevan
Col, traversing the Bonar Glacier and staying at Colin Todd hut. At 6 am on the
third day, in settled weather, we began 12 hours of climbing the steep North
West Ridge to the summit of Mt. Aspiring and descended to Colin Todd again. The
last 2 days were spent walking out- a steep descent in bad weather made the day
particularly challenging, with flooded river crossings and cold, wet, windy
conditions. It was a long day on the back of the 12 hour summit day and I
was grateful for my fitness and stamina." "Four years ago, I would not have considered that
I could go into the mountains and learn to climb peaks, navigate my way into
and out of crevasses, abseil, pitch, tie various knots, and much more. When I'm
in the middle of a technical climb or really tired after a 12+ hr day, I often
think of all the hard training with Rod and I'm grateful to him. When looking at
the amazing photos documenting the trip I'm grateful to my excellent and
professional guide, Andrew. I could not have summited Mt. Aspiring without
the support of these two people." "Each year when I return to the mountains I
learn more and am physically and mentally challenged, while in the company of
people I really like being with. The satisfaction that comes with learning and
applying new skills and achieving a level of proficiency in the mountains while
surrounded by their breath-taking beauty and power is exhilarating and soulful." "I recommend a guided trip in the mountains to
anyone who wants a holiday adventure that will challenge you to the core and give
your training at BodyTech specific focus."

Personal Training- Reaching Your Goal
What a great achievement Margie! Rod, Margie's Personal Trainer of over 3 years, says
he's "constantly amazed and impressed with her endless energy, dedication and
enthusiasm towards her training, health and life. Reaching her goal to climb one of NZ's
highest peaks is an inspiration. I was confident that her intense training
would enable her to tackle this difficult challenge and very harsh alpine
conditions."
So, Margie, what's next?

Holiday in a minute
Karla Brodie, Body Tech yoga instructor
offers a few simple daily practices to help overcome high levels of mental
stress which can cause headaches, anxiety, insomnia, hyperventilation, or
depleted energy levels:
- As
you wake stretch your whole body out like a star fish, then curl up into a
ball, then stretch out again. This movement supports the whole body waking up
and breathing.
-
Sit
well with good posture, this supports breathing, mental focus and helps us to
maintain good energy levels.
-
Take
a breathing break, count down ten exhalations, at the end of the count pause
for a few breaths. This practice can have a settling effect on the mind.
-
Put
your feet up the wall for a few minutes at the end of the day, this position is
cooling, settling, calming for the mind and body. It may help to reduce tension
in the back, and fatigue and tightness in the legs.
Karla is offering a
new course called Yoga for Restful Sleep, to be held on Thursdays, at 6-7pm throughout May, $80. The course explores yoga
practices that are deeply restoring.
Karla is also available for private lessons, contact her for more details or bookings on:

Staff Corner
Welcome back: We are
thrilled to have Supervisor Justin Bradley return to BodyTech after his Canadian
OE:
"Coming back home to New Zealand, I knew I wanted to stay within the fitness
industry and to get back to a world-class facility, BodyTech, where I first
started. After working in a few gyms overseas, I've realized the level of
professionalism and quality of service we provide is second to none. This has
allowed me to continue on with getting members closer to their goals. Now back
for 5 months, I've had time to reconnect with old relationships and also
to start creating new ones." Congratulations: April wedding bells for
David Tilton and Aimee; Christelle Uys (Ascot) and Donovan.
Good bye: Last month sadly we said farewell to Elsa, who
continually kept the locker rooms and spa wonderfully clean, and Katie from
Sales, who left to join family in Australia.
We welcome back Pragna from maternity leave
to take over from Elsa.
