Greetings!

I hope you managed to take time off over the holiday season to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit.

As for me, I gave myself the gift of "no weights" over 6 weeks. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my body. My first weight session was early February and my trainer, Rod, asked what goals I had in mind for this year? My answer to him was simple: "to be injury free and to feel strong and energized after my workouts."

I don't know about you, but I don't believe in New Year's resolutions just for the sake of making them. I make achievable commitments throughout the year and seek to follow them through.

As a working mother of two daughters (15 and 11 years) I've committed to school drop-offs and pick-ups, grateful I can work this into my schedule, as being around for my girls at this age is a time to treasure.

Like me, you probably all have commitments which limit/condense your time, something I feel makes you think more creatively especially when it comes to fitting in an exercise routine. Some days feel harder than others, sure, but I think the greatest gifts are the ones we give to ourselves:

  • The Gift of EXERCISE each day. Scheduling exercise into my diary is a non- negotiable "my time". I'm up at 5.30am making school lunches then walking the dog on days I don't do weights. The follow through on this gift is that I'm setting up a positive role model for my kids, husband, significant other. I believe "happy Mummy, happy family.....and lucky husband!"

  • The Gift of ACCEPTANCE. Knowing that we can't have it all at the same time contradicts what many popular magazines would have us believe. In my experience there is always a cost in "having it all NOW", be it your health, marriage, job, family or your mental wellbeing. I've not yet met anyone with superpowers, have you? Recognise your limitations, put strategies in place to help succeed and prioritize what matters most before you burnout.

  • The GIFT of RELAXATION. Often overlooked and undervalued is taking time out to just BE. I'm just as guilty as the next person of sometimes getting so caught up in the busy-ness of life by (human) doing that I forget to respect the (human) being within me. Equally important is my belief to take a moment to relax and enjoy time with my family and friends.

Have an awesome 2010.

Letter from the Himalayas

Last year Yoga teacher, Karla Brodie had the opportunity to live in Nepal, teaching yoga to some wonderful and kind Tibetan Monks:

"My 'BodyTech moment' came whilst teaching the teenagers. Unlike the youngest, exuberant monks who loved leaping like frogs or growling like tigers, the teenagers were asking the big questions: 'How do I build my chest and arms?' 'How can I be super strong?' I am thinking where is that knowledgeable BT Personal Trainer when I need them!

On to the older monks' big question: 'How can I get rid of my big belly?!' At 6am each morning of my stay, golden sun rising, casting a brilliant orange glow on to the snow capped Himalayan ranges, Mt Everest in sight, I am teaching core strength and stability work to Lama Rigzin. Lama is the monasteries master painter who spends his day sketching and overseeing the ancient tradition of Tibetan Gompa painting in a most glorious Temple. Life is good.

I have returned to BodyTech, inspired to teach the ancient art of Yoga to enhance wellbeing in everyday life."

New Tuesday and Thursday evening classes: Classes offer time and space to retreat into the simple practices of breathing, sitting and standing well, unwinding high levels of stress in the mind, shoulders, organs and learning to rest well. The class also builds strength, and stability, concentration, and mindfulness.

Tuesday, 6-7:30pm: 'I love Yoga' class is suitable for students with some Yoga experience. The classes run as an 8 week, pre booked, pre paid course.

Thursday, 6-7pm: Designed for new students of Yoga who may sit, stand, or run around for many hours of the day. Monthly themes include March - 'a practical guide to sitting and standing well' and April: 'do you have tight shoulders?' Classes run as a monthly pre booked, pre paid course.

You may also see Karla on the Gym floor, as part of the Body Tech Team, offering individualised advice on how to safely and effectively lengthen muscles with an emphasis on breath, structural alignment and overall form.

Karla is also available for private lessons, contact her for more details or bookings on:

Registered Nutritionist

Nicola Page is a registered nutritionist and great believer that what you eat everyday forms a large part of the foundation of your health and well being. The computer saying 'garbage in, garbage out' can apply to your body when you have a poor diet over a period of time. On a cellular level it can even cause inflammation which is emerging as a major cause of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease and is connected to weight gain and osteoarthritis.

A nutrition consultation involves looking at your lifestyle and diet to find out what you can eat to optimize your health now and in the future.

Nicola offers her services at BodyTech:
1 hour initial consultation, $145; ½ hour follow up, $79; 15 minutes, $45, phone 027-2776445, nic.page@xtra.co.nz.
