Center of Attention
As a kid I remember the long road to my summer camp. As soon as the bus turned onto that dirt road, we would start to sing the camp song. "We are on the road, to anywhere, never heart ache, never care..." And we knew we had made it when we looked out the window of the bus and there, right in the center of camp, stood the main flagpole. It was the first thing that caught your eye on the way in and the last image you had of camp on your way out. This was the center of the camp. Now, think about your home. When you walk in, what is your eye immediately drawn to? A family picture? The television? A mirror or wall hanging?

Learning is FUN at Levine Academy!

Be The Change Club
Last week, the first graders participated in the final Be the Change Club meeting of this school year. Since August each grade between 1st - 4th have had the rotating opportunity to meet with Dr. Wolbe during a Friday lunch. While strictly voluntary for attendance, most of each grade level did attend their sessions. The meetings all followed the same format:
If you really knew me...
Students completed this sentence by sharing some of their worries, fears, and concerns. Whether thunder or lightening, sleeping in the dark, ghosts in closets, or upsets with parents, teachers, or friends, students shared and then helped one another devise strategies to solve their problems. This is a skill that becomes more and more essential as children grow toward independence. Learning how to advocate for themselves in a calm, appropriate, reasonable fashion is a lifelong skill that will help children find greater success and satisfaction throughout their lives; this skill is much preferred to just having parents jump in each time their child encounters an upset.
Just for today...
This is an opportunity for students to make suggestions for what can be done to improve our surroundings. Suggestions may be directed toward the school, Dallas, or even the world. Examples of their ideas include topics such as recycling, puppy mills, polite manners, social service, tzedakah, helping people new to the community, and the benefit of prayer. Students then vote to choose one suggestion to represent the grade level's idea that week.
After straightening the meeting room, each student is given some orange BTC Club bracelets. These are not to keep as a collection, but to give to others if we see they are sad or just having a difficult day.
This is the 5th year lower school students have participated in this special program. Students have grown, learned, and developed lifelong coping skills that will benefit them forever; just in school we have seen a remarkable difference. We are so pleased our students took the time to participate in this very worthy endeavor.

July 10 - The Bubble Discussion led by Rabbi Asher Knight In a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, two gay men, one Israeli and one Palestinian, attempt to live a normal life within the safe bubble of their small Tel Aviv neighborhood. Alternately funny and sad, this beautiful film presets a human story of young Israelis living in a challenging situation. Adult themes and images.

Her unique circumstances and triumphant spirit will capture your heart as she touches an eclectic array of strangers on her journey home.
July 24 - La Rafle Discussion led by Rabbi Adam Allenberg The true story of the French Vichy regime's mass imprisonment and disposal of 13,000 Parisian Jews in the summer of 1942. A poignant, well-acted and faithful retelling of a little known episode of the Holocaust.
July 31 - The Matchmaker Discussion led by Cantor Richard Cohn A coming-of-age story set in 1968 Haifa, still very much in the shadow of the Holocaust. Richly reflects the unique mosaic of Israeli life just after the Six Day War, and effortlessly draws audiences into its charmingly eccentric world.
