Rabbi Eve Posen's Parasha of The Week (Follow Rabbi Eve on Facebook!)

Poker Face

As a new rabbi, I am always looking for areas where I can improve my performance. I often reflect, thinkingRabbi Posen Headshot about what I might do differently the next time I teach a lesson, give a d'var Torah, or offer advice. One thing I've been working on is my poker face. You might wonder why a rabbi would need a poker face. You see, I wear my heart on my sleeve, and my emotions often give me away. But in rabbinical school, we were instructed to keep our emotions in check. Who wants to see the rabbi cry at the wedding she's officiating? The problem is that for someone who tears up at Folgers commercials, keeping a straight face isn't always easy. When I am in a fantastic mood, my face lights up, and when I'm worried, it doesn't take a mind reader to see it in my eyes. So the question is where is the middle ground and what does the Torah have to say about public displays?

You can review all of Rabbi Posen's weekly Parshah teachings by going to the Levine Academy website. Go to News & Events and click Publications or Click Here.

Parshah Trivia:

Last week - Parshat Acharei Mot/Kedoshim:

1. Why couldn't Aharon enter behind the curtain that covered the Ark?  Because God's presence was there.

2. What reason does God give for the Israelites needing to be holy?  Because God, their God is holy.

This week - Parshat Emor:

1. On which day of life is an animal allowed to be brought as an offering?

2. On which day of which month, according to the Torah, is Pesach to be celebrated?

HOLY ROBOTS

Rabbi Posen and the 6th grade has spent this year learning how to understand texts in the Hebrew and then apply them to their daily lives. Their final piece of text comes from Vayikra, Leviticus chapter 19 known as the "Holiness Code." They learned mitzvot that relate to how we treat others, how we treat ourselves and our land. They discussed what it means to be holy as God tells the Israelites to be holy because God, (their creator) is holy.

To finish this unit, students were asked to create Holy Robots, and using verses from the text they need to show how the robot uses its eyes, ears, mouth, stomach hands, feet, heart and brain to increase holiness in our world. As an added challenge, the robots must be made out of recycled materials. Here is 6E in their learning laboratory creating their robots.

Robots will be finished and on display next Friday.
