One of Each
Making a seating chart is possibly the most difficult part of preparing for class. Organizing tables for my wedding seemed easy compared to the Tetris game of names when deciding who will work best with whom and how to organize the classroom so that learners are in the optimal position for learning. There are entire lists of criteria to keep in mind: who fights, who chats, who needs to be up front to see the board, who needs to be in the back because they prefer to stand. Then comes the partnering. I have to think of each student, their strengths, their challenges, their level of patience and their work ethic. If one of these pieces is off, the entire seating chart can crumble. I love the challenge of getting to know the students well enough to know exactly where they should be in my room and making sure that every single student is included, comfortable and ready for the best learning opportunity. Mr. Rocca and members of his 6th
grade science class discuss new
ideas for Middle School electives
over a pizza lunch! |
Education to bring the Excellence 2000 (E2K) program to Jewish day schools. Through exciting laboratory experiments, fun research projects, and international competitions, E2K students will have the opportunity and encouragement to take their interest in science to the next level. Examples of program coursework include a microbiology study focusing on bacteria cultures and the effects of antibiotics, as well as a physics lesson that incorporates the study of rockets. Students will have the freedom to take these lessons and experiments and truly make them their own.
We are happy to announce this exciting program will be offered to Levine Academy's 7th and 8th grade students as an exploratory next year, complementing our current electives in robotics, rocketry, and others.
After traveling to Israel in February for intensive program training, Levine Academy's 5th/6th grade science teacher Jay Rocca will be one of the faculty members teaching this elective. Just this week, Mr. Rocca met with current 6th grade students over lunch to gain feedback and input as this elective takes shape, as well as to share more details regarding the program. Other similar brainstorming sessions will take place with this year's 7th graders later this spring, involving our teacher of rocketry and robotics, Ms. Valerie Cheshier, and other members of our faculty who are involved with electives.
Our sixth grade students were honored to be asked for their opinions, and gave lots of feedback! They are now looking forward to taking part in this and other electives next year, and more information will be forthcoming about these programs later this semester.

Learning is FUN at Levine Academy! | |
Starfish Science Stars!
The 6th grade finished their unit study of the ocean with a starfish dissection. After studying ocean water and resources, we focused on the anatomy of different ocean creatures. The starfish revealed extremely interesting digestive and nervous systems that we were able to examine in the lab. We also studied the starfishes' papillae, which are the tiny structures that allow the starfish to breathe. Finally, we talked about the life cycle of the starfish while examining its reproductive parts and discussing sexual and asexual reproduction.

The 10 Literary Elements - The Musical!
The 4th grade has been studying the 10 literary devices that are used in good literature. To really internalize these elements, Miss Taylor's reading class created songs explaining the 10 literary elements. The song could either be an original one or use the tune of a familiar song. No doubt the 4th grade will never forget the 10 literary elements!

'How the Sabbath Works': Sabbath as a day of meaning and hope
Tuesday, March 27, Pollman Hall
7 p.m. Dessert and coffee
7:30 p.m. Lecture
On the seventh day, as everyone knows, we are supposed to rest. So what does it mean to ask how the Sabbath works? Judith Shulevitz takes an ancient religious institution and unpacks it to show what it can do for us and what thoughts it is meant to help us think, whether we're observant or not. The social and political lessons of the Sabbath are for everyone who feels that daily life in the modern world has become painfully hectic and disjointed. Judith Shulevitz is a cultural critic and award-winning magazine editor whose book The Sabbath World: Glimpses of a Different Order of Time has been widely acclaimed. She helped to start both Slate and Lingua Franca, and has been a writer for The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine and The New Republic. The author's book, The Sabbath World: Glimpses of a Different Order of Time will be available for purchase ($15.00). RSVP is appreciated. If you have questions, please contact Nancy Rivin at nrivin@tedallas.org or 214.706.0000, ext. 155 |
