All the Small Things
Teaching in the Middle School, I find myself trying, as I'm sure the parents do, to find the happy medium between micromanaging the students and their study habits (like requiring benders and study guides and giving extra time for projects) and letting the students manage their own time and studying schedule. If I micromanage, the students get the work done, but they also lose the responsibility for their own learning, homework and growth. If I let the students figure it out completely on their own, then I risk facing less than stellar quiz grades and assignments that are never turned in. It's the same situation in the office place. By micromanaging we can become bogged down by the nitty gritty, but at least we'll stay on top of the details. On the other hand, if we let the reigns go a little or delegate responsibility, we might find ourselves in a heap of trouble if something gets left behind. So we're faced with a challenge: how do we find our happy medium?

Learning is FUN at Levine Academy! | |
Freckle Juice!
When Mrs. Sheinberg's class completed their reading of Judy Blume's "Freckle Juice," they got a special treat to help them learn. The book is about a little boy that wishes he had freckles, and is convinced by another student that her concoction of "freckle juice" will give him the desired effect. Ms. Sheinberg's class talked about what they might like to change about their appearance. Ms. Sheinberg was very pleased when quite a few of them said they liked themselves the way they were.
While her class worked, Ms. Sheinberg gave them her own version of freckle juice to drink!! Of course, they were hesitant at first, but most tried the secret recipe - punch and food coloring. After everyone tried the juice, they got a big surprise! Brendan had a face full of freckles! It worked!!! (Thanks to some help from Ms. Reese!) Ms. Sheinberg says that she loves this unit and has former students that say they remember it fondly. A wonderful and very fun way to learn to read!!

Colonial Days
From Mrs. Okowita:
The 6th grade Social Studies students prepared and presented lessons relating to three aspects of Colonial Life during our Colonization Unit. "Colonial Children," "Colonial Trades and Crafts," and "Colonial Medicine" groups were given three specific objectives based on various levels of Bloom's thinking skills. The groups used creative approaches in their informative presentations of this information. Great job, 6th Graders!
Meeting Hannah the Guide Dog
Second grade was excited to have Chelsea Morrow, an outreach worker from the Seeing Eye, come to our school. Chelsea has been coming to speak to the children here for the past 11 years! Chelsea brought her new dog, Hannah, with her. The children asked many good questions and they enjoyed learning all about having a guide dog, and what it takes to train a dog for the blind. As a result of Chelsea's talks, second grade has been participating in the Seeing Eye's fund raiser, Pennies for Puppies, for the past 2 years and once again this will be the second grade mitzvah project.
