Rabbi Eve Posen's Parasha of The Week (Follow Rabbi Eve on Facebook)

Beneath the Pale Moon Light

There is a classic scene in the movie An American Tale where the small mouse, Fievel, is lost from his family. He's all alone at night, staring up into the bright moonlight and singing "SomewhRabbi Posen Headshot ere out there, beneath the pale moon light, someone's thinking of me, and loving me tonight." The moon not only lights the little mouse's way was he tries to find his family, but it offers a comfortable connection even when someone is far away.

As Jews, we also have a special connection to the moon. Our months and years are tied to the lunar cycle. This week we read parshat Bo, during which the Israelites finally make their way out of the oppression in Egypt and can almost taste freedom for the first time. In a way, this anticipation is like those months leading up to the birth of a child. Parents ponder their hopes and dreams for their new baby. They're already making wishes, listing wants and setting goals. Similarly, you can imagine God at this moment when His people, the Children of Israel, are nearing their birth into a new era, with new needs, desires and freedom. As the "parent," God's dreams include a calendar comprised of guidelines and instructions for daily living that were sure to enable the Israelites to live their lives through structure.

Here are this week's Parashah Trivia questions:

Bo:
1. According to the text, how long did the plague of darkness last?

2. Where were the children of Israel commanded to put objects to remember leaving Egypt?

Answers to last week's trivia questions:

Va'era:
1. What did God tell Moshe he would use to bring the Israelites out of Egypt?
He would use an outstretched arm.

2. What was unusual about the plague of hail? It had fire in it.
North American Jewish Day School Conference

Over the MLK weekend Mar S and I attended the North American Jewish Day School Conference in Atlanta,
Flame photo at NAJDS Conference
Check out the flame on the Schechter Day School Network display at the NAJDS conference
GA.  This conference is the product of the collaboration of the day school associations of the reform, conservative and orthodox movements as well as the association of community schools and other organizations that help make day school education possible.

The theme was 21st century innovations in education and we spent our days learning about cutting edge technology in classrooms and how to push day school education to the next level.  This conference of over 600 day school educators provided me with the opportunity to learn from educational leaders across America regardless of movement or theology.  As a lifelong learner, one of the most exciting components of this conference is the opportunity to learn side by side with the teachers who helped inspire me to become a Jewish educator.

The Solomon Schechter Day School Network created a workshop for the network to focus on the many incredible programs and learning opportunities that take place in our schools.  We spent 6 hours working together to problem solve, to brainstorm innovations and to discuss the excitement that comes from exploring Jewish texts in our own communities.

I return to Dallas with enthusiasm and excitement, with new ideas for teaching and learning and so proud and honored to be able to share my passion and learning with our community.
