 Where Everyone Knows Your Name

I'll never forget my first trip to Israel. I was in 10th grade, and I went on the Ramah High School program for a semester. I remember landing in Israel and feeling a rush of emotions as I realized the history of the land I had just entered. I had always been told that this was my land, the land of the Jewish people. I wondered if it would feel like it was mine. Shortly after I arrived, we settled into our dorm and began classes, trips and exploring. As I soaked it all in, the land did feel like mine and I had an instant connection, but at the same time, I still felt a little out of place. I wasn't Israeli and I had no family there, so on weekends when other kids would visit their family, I would feel left out, like this wasn't my land at all.

It's a bird, it's a plane....NO!  It's Super ECC Director!!!  Yes, that is ECC Director Sheryl Feinberg finishing off 20 PUSH UPS!  (Never underestimate a member of Levine Academy's faculty!!)  Also, Rabbi Posen whirled her way into the record books with 6 cartwheels.  BRAVO!

All of this was in the name of raising funds for much needed equipment for the ECC Jewish Studies and P.E. programs.

MAZAL TOV to them both!!

Learning is FUN (and Levine Academy has proof!)

Studying Shapes

Mrs. Reese's class had a wonderful math lesson this week! The students have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes, searching for different shapes in the classroom and at home. As a way to tie in their social studies unit, they used their new shape knowledge to create tepees. Each student learned to make a circle and then a cone. They also had a great time decorating the tepees with Native American symbols. This was a wonderful way for the children to see how math relates to all areas of our lives and a fun way to tie in what they were learning in social studies!

CSI: The Levine Unit?

No, the eighth grade did not view a crime investigation show during Ms. Geffen's  LA class. The studentsGeffen's LA Class presented their CSI: Room 221 project for To Kill a Mockingbird. After reading the magnificent novel, they had one week to create a metaphoric image of the protagonist that included the character's major traits. Each pair of students studied three body parts such as the head, eyes, and ears, representing the intellectual, observational, and auditory aspects of that individual, finding textual support for each description. The class most successfully met the challenge by displaying fine analytical and artistic abilities. They became excellent investigators.

Student pairs and their assigned parts of Scout, the novel's protagonist:

Head, Eyes, Ears: Brett Akop  and Dani Milner

Nose, Mouth, and Arms: Jordan Gernsbacher and Elena Okowita (pictured)

Hands, Torso, and Heart: Shira Hovav and Eylon Kidron

Feet, Legs, and Wings: Jonas Frenkel and Elise Eisenberg
