What's Mine is Yours, and What's Yours is Ours
It's the cliche you've heard a hundred times. "There's no 'I' in team." Maybe you've even heard the typical, sarcastic pre-teen comeback, "But there is "me." It's the coach beckoning out to the player who isn't sharing the ball with his teammates. It's the orchestra or band conductor when one musician doesn't match their pitch with the others. It's the teacher in a classroom when one student constantly calls out the answers before anyone else has a chance. Or it's in a professional setting when one co-worker is constantly promoting themselves at the expense of another. One of the hardest and most essential lessons to learn when interacting in society is how to share, how to be a part of the community. We try to teach our children as young as we can that they are a part of the family, they are a part of the community, and that we have a responsibility to others to do our part to help. But sometimes, when this lesson is taken to heart, we find ourselves so entrenched in the problems and workings of the community that we lose ourselves as individuals. The ideal is a balance between personal responsibility and communal responsibility, and real peace is a world of give and take.

7th and 8th grade students meets former IDF Lone Soldier
On Tuesday, September 27, former IDF lone soldier Jules Kramer spoke with our 7th and 8th grade students. Jules (son of Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas CEO, Susan Kramer) served in the IDF as a paratrooper until last year when he completed his military service. He is now studying in Israel, training to be a tour guide and remains very involved in the lone soldier program as an active board member. Jules shared his passion for Israel, his reasons for making Aliyah as well as the challenges he has faced in making that decision. He spoke to the students about what everyday life in Israel is like and what it means to stand up and defend the country. Jules answered many questions asked by the students who were thoroughly engaged in his presentation. Levine Academy would like to thank the ATID community high school program for bringing Jules Kramer to our community and so generously offering to have him speak with our students.
Lone Soldiers do not have immediate family in Israel - they are usually new immigrants, orphans, or Israeli-born soldiers estranged from their families. About 5,000 IDF soldiers, classified as Lone Soldiers, serve their country every year despite dealing with numerous emotional and financial struggles.

K-8 Rosh Hashanah Programs
K-8 Students spent the morning of Wednesday, September 28 preparing for the upcoming Rosh Hashana holidays. Divided into three subjects- teshuva, tefilla and tzedakah- all students engaged in age appropriate and meaningful activities that reverberated around the year's theme of Hineini- Taking Responsibility for me, my family, my school, my community and my Jewish people.
Students decorated and planted pots that were later delivered by some students and their families to the Legacy of Willow Bend and Preston Hollow to provide residents unable to observe the holiday a loving message of care. Others participated in a values approach to giving tzedakah, studied Rambam's ladder for giving tzedakah, learned about the power of tefilla and what the steps to doing teshuva are. Buddies met to exchange Rosh Hashana cards and photos and the morning ended with a Shofar Wave, which was probably the hit of the entire day! Thank you to all of the K-8 teachers who so beautifully and smoothly ran this program.
8th Grade Participates in program supporting the release of Gilad Shalit
8th graders gathered with students around the world on Wednesday, October 5, to participate in a program of support on behalf of Gilad Shalit and the other missing IDF soldiers. Via videoconferencing, the program originated from the tent of the Shalit family located in front of the Prime Minister's home in Jerusalem. Students read various psalms together with students around the world and listened to speakers including Dr. Elie Wiesel, Chief Rabbi of London Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Noam Shalit, father of Gilad. Several songs were interspersed throughout the 30 minute program and over 70 schools from around the world joined together. We pray that our prayers for the release of Gilad Shalit and other missing IDF soldiers are heard and answered. Moments like these connect our students to the very essence of what it means to be Jewish and have a Jewish homeland. These same 8th graders will visit Israel for a 19 day trip in March.
