Do Good!

I received an email this week about one of our employees, Becky.  She is a doggy foster mom.  She says, "I've been volunteering with Houston Beagle Rescue for nearly 11 years and I have been a board member for probably at least the past 5 years or so.Pictured is one of her rescue beagles who was adopted and is now a therapy dog at a nursing home/rehab center.  Christmas is a good time to share good will!

Student of the Month - Tamara

How has Bikram Yoga impacted my life?  Really, the question should be how hasn't it impacted my life?  All of us survived our first class and we had the courage and tenacity to return.  There was something that spoke to each of us in that first practice.  For me, it started out as a supplement to my existing workout regime and in return I got more from this than I ever anticipated! I know that being introduced to yoga was a divine intervention.  When I practice, my mat is a place I can go to and get exactly what I need at the time I need it and I never know what that need is until I get there and work through it.  I may need compassion; I may need guidance; I may need patience; I may need grace; I may need to learn to love myself a little more - whatever the need is at that given time being on my mat is a place where I learn these lessons and then I take those lessons with me and try to practice them in the world where there are unlimited distractions.  I have to learn and practice the same lessons over and over again until I truly learn the lesson and it resonates with me.  I have had people who practice Yoga on a regular basis ask me what do I find so wonderful about Bikram?  To me, it is discipline that drives a person to do better.  It is through tough times, we become a more compassionate, loving and more open to diversity.  And, if we can survive the hot room, we can survive anything!  I have learned through my practice how focusing on the breath, being present in every moment and without ego is true happiness.  Each day I set a new intention based on what ever comes to my mind and sometimes I dedicate my practice to a specific cause, person or whatever my heart needs at that time.  It is in those moments where I feel at peace and without chaos and chatter in my monkey brain.   It is approaching 2 years (March) that I have consecutively practiced Bikram Yoga and I have since supplemented this practice with another hatha yoga because I am a firm believer that you can never have too much yoga in your life!  Bikram is my practice of choice and this studio is my Yoga Kula (community) - until the ClearLake location opens, that is.  This is the most profound experience in my life that truly adds a balance to my body, mind and soul! I honor the light in each of my fellow practitioners - Namaste.

91-year-old yoga teacher asks, 'Why should I quit?'

Before her feet even touch the floor each morning, Bernice Bates is practicing yoga.

While still in bed, she does her vinyasa, a series of seven or eight postures that gets her blood flowing. She puts her arms above her head for a stretch and a yawn, pulls her knees to her chest, "walks" the ceiling with her feet and stretches her shoulders and hands.

"By the time you're through - it takes about eight minutes - you're ready to walk, instead of slopping around," Bates said. "You can walk to the kitchen, to the bathroom, whatever your procedure is and not sort of drag yourself and say, 'I don't want to do this. I don't want to do that.' You're ready to go."
