Pearland Bikram Yoga
January

Greetings!

A clean slate.  The new year always brings a clean slate.  You get a "do over"!  What will you choose to "do over"?  What will be enhanced in your life, getting more attention than before (hint: Bikram at PBY)?  What will be dropped out of your life, getting no attention at all (hint: fried foods)?  Who and how will you choose to be?  You can be anything you want to be.  You are the miracle of life.  You are always creating whether you are conscious of it or not.  So choose wisely, consciously.

See you in the hot room!

Student of the Month:
Marcia

I have tried many different forms of exercise over the years and have always been addicted to lifting weights and running.  So, when watching a talk show one afternoon in December 2006 and hearing about Bikram yoga, and the benefits it afforded, although skeptical about sticking with it I was eager to try.  I began practicing Jan 02, 2007 at a local Houston studio. Taz was my first instructor and I think it was the enthusiasm that she brought to her teaching that kept me interested. That was over three years ago and now I'm sharing her enthusiasm.

To be truthful, my relationship with Bikram was a bit haphazard at first. Sometimes I would only go once a week or not at all. I found reasons not to go, telling myself that it's hot, or it's too far a drive!  Nonetheless, as time went on, I found that I kept coming back, which was new for me. I found I was approaching Bikram differently than I had any other form of exercise.

My approach was not intentional. I simply found that I truly missed not going to class. I slowly realized that I gained something through Bikram that I could not find anywhere else. In fact, I don't think I knew I was missing the many benefits of this type of yoga. Even now, it is hard to define. Yes, my body has changed and I feel stronger than ever before. I am more flexible and less stressed.  I have learned how to breathe and I have focus. But it is even more than that, as the benefits of Bikram have extended to areas of my life beyond the studio. I am more content with my relationship with my family, my career, my friends and most importantly myself. Simply put, I feel more alive.

Over the past three years, there have been times when school did not allow me time to attend classes as often as I wanted. Since graduation, I have gone from practicing maybe once a week to just recently completing a 60-Day Challenge. Just starting yoga in the first place has given me the determination needed to complete those 60 days.

The great instructors at the Pearland Bikram Yoga Studio have taught me many things...such as, no matter what type of class I've had the day before, they help me to get right back in there and do the best I can do for that day. That's it - the best I can do in that moment. It is not about competition or how well the person next to me is doing; it is not about 110% all the time; it is not about what happened two minutes ago. It is about what is happening now. It is about taking the time to improve myself and my practice. It is about personal progress.

I am dedicated to my practice as I continue to grow and change. I believe in this powerful series Bikram has created. I thank the instructors at Pearland Bikram Yoga Studio for helping me to make progress, both physically and mentally. I also thank them for all the progress I have yet to make!

Posture of the Month

As we embark on a fresh, new, year; it is a good time to think about what we are undertaking in the hot room.  Rather than focus on a single posture, let's first inventory our intentions for our yoga for this year.

Often, because Bikram is so challenging - not the incense and chanting kind of yoga, we forget that it is still yoga.  What does that mean?  Here are a few few good definitions:
  • Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility that is achieved through the three paths of actions, knowledge, and devotion.

  • Yoga (Sanskrit) refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

  • Yoga is a healing system of theory and practice. It is a combination of breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditation that has been practiced for more than 5,000 years.
What this means is that what we practice in the hot room is about moving towards something larger than ourselves.  There is no room for competition, criticism or judgement of any kind in that endeavor.  That refers to yourself and to others.

We are here to move through our bodies in a matter of meditation.  It gives a fresh meaning to our "bodies as temples".  So this year, make sure that your yoga is about you going deeper into you.  It is a contemplative sport - a conundrum of the best kind.

Breathe and Be.
A Thank You

In December, we set up a food donation box for the Houston Food Bank.  We were thinking of all of the people in Houston who should be able to celebrate at the holidays as we will.

We were jubilant that so many brought so much!  We were able to donate a full box, and it was a big box!  Thank you so much for thinking about all of us, those present and those not, at the holidays!

Zen Corner: Change

Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to change it all. Any day we wish; we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish; we can start a new activity. Any day we wish; we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause. As Shakespeare uniquely observed, "The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves." We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions.

They need the truth. They need the whole truth. And they need nothing but the truth.

We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out. And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness and joy into our daily lives.

And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life-If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree. You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life-and it all begins with your very own power of choice.

There are so many people required to make Pearland Bikram Yoga "go".  We have Front Desk Staff, Teachers, a Studio Manager, Web Services, Maintenance, Cleaning Services, lots of outside services and vendors and of course all of our wonderful students.  I am so very grateful for what each of you is and does to help us create the ethereal that that is often taken for granted, a business that provides a wonderful service.  Without all of us coming together, to co-create this, we would all be alone looking for something to fill the void that PBY fills.  I am so grateful.  Here is to a wonderful new year together.

Many blessings,

Taz
