AIDS Yoga-thon Bering Omega

Because of your generosity PBY is able to make a sizable donation to the Bering Omega organization to help those people afflicted by AIDS in Houston. Particularly at this time of the year it is so vital to give to others as the holidays can be either devastating or joyous depending on the love received now. As long as we are human there will be a need to help those who have less. Hopefully now the meals that these families receive for the week will be able to last all the way through the weekend. Don't forget to donate your time to Bering Omega and their clients! Thank you to Deborah G. - our December Angel for contributing the single most dollar amount to this yoga-thon (see inset). |

Zen Corner
Everyday is a Holiday

Perhaps the greatest story available to us here in America regarding the holiday tradition of Christmas is the story of the birth of Jesus the Christ, a Jew, who transformed the world. His message of Oneness with the Father has been shared by many Messengers: Moses, Quan Yin, the Buddha, Allah, Muhammad...there are countless others. What was he truly sharing? That there is truth and resurrection for each and every in The Spirit of the the One he knew as The Father, often called God, Yaweh, Creator, nature, life... among a million other names. If nothing else, celebrate that there is reunion in Oneness to cancel the cold, dreary thought that many have created as a reality - that we are separate. We are not; we are all One by whatever names, creeds, religions, sexes and all of the other categories our human minds have created for the sheer folly of life as mankind. In the end and always, we are One.

Pranayama Deep Breathing Posture of the Month II
"I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart: I am, I am, I am."
~Sylvia Plath
The Background:
- Prana = Life Force
- Yama = Control
- Standing Deep Breathing teaches you to use up to 100% of your lung capacity
- The posture initiates breath control which creates a bridge between the physical body and mind to encourage an equilibrium between the two
- The purpose of this posture is to prepare the body for your yoga practice by increasing blood circulation and heart rate
- The breath in Pranayama breathing increases lung elasticity and power which helps to open otherwise residual alveoli
The Benefits:
- Good for mental relaxation
- Helps sleep disorders
- Decreases anxiety and irritability
- Stimulates blood circulation and brings fresh oxygenated blood to every cell of the body
- Prevents respiratory problems such as bronchitis, emphysema, asthma and shortness of breath
10 Tips to Improve your Pranayama Breathing:
- From Bikram's book, "The tricky part here is the breathing--you never knew that a mindless, repetitive act could be so complex! Here you must breathe by compressing the throat." So pay most attention to the breath in order to get the full benefits of the posture.
- Go slowly. In order to achieve full lung capacity you must breathe in and out for the full six counts or for as long as you can.
- You must keep your spine straight. No backward bending.
- To help keep your spine straight remember to suck your stomach in. This means you hollow your belly so your rib cage is visible. By sucking your stomach in it helps you use your full lung capacity.
- Keep your eyes open. During the exhale as you tilt your head backward many people close their eyes at this point without even realizing it. Keeping your eyes open helps you stay present in the room.
- Keep your hips forward toward the mirror by squeezing your bum to help keep your spine completely straight.
- Keep your shoulders in line with the hips. Try to keep your balance without tipping from side to side. Avoid this by pushing your weight into your heels.
- Exhale the air out completely. This is very important because once you completely release all the CO2 in your lungs O2 can come completely in helping to utilize residual alveoli.
- Feeling a pinch in the neck and burning in the shoulders is very normal.
- It's completely fine to feel dizzy in the posture. In fact, if you feel dizzy you are doing it right.

Note from Taz
Reflctions on 2010
I often say, "It's no wonder we get old, time goes by so quickly."
As I write this note bidding 2010 farewell, I want to share my real appreciation for the way that owning Pearland Bikram Yoga has changed my life.
It goes without saying that I love Bikram Yoga. I changed my whole life and those of my family in order to own and run PBY. I love spending my days with you, the family that joins me at 6am and 8:30pm and all of the times in between to really work every part of your mind, body, soul.
Congratulate yourself on what you have chosen to spend your spare time doing. Your energetic shift creates a ripple on the earth that produces peace. We could always use more of that.
Thank you for choosing to spend your time with me, with us. I look forward to 2011 and many more happy times together. Happiest of Holidays.
Many Blessings,
Taz |
