Wow, Thanksgiving already.  Where did the year go?  It seems as if we were just writing up those New Year's resolutions.  Speaking of, how did you do with those resolutions?  You have time to make good on those now, if you haven't already.  A wise man once said, "It's never too late...to start once again!"

AIDS Yoga-thon at PBY in November!
Bering Omega, the non-profit leader in HIV/AIDS care in Houston, is organizing a city-wide Yoga-thon throughout the month of November.  This is done in conjunction with World AIDS day.  The goal is to raise money for life-saving health care and social services for the most vulnerable families and communities impacted by HIV/AIDS in Houston.

Yoga-thon Mission: To bring the community together into a state of wholeness in a powerful act of Karma Yoga to bring compassion to those living with HIV/AIDS.

PBY is joining the cause to help local families impacted by AIDS.

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP:

  1. There will be a donation box at the front desk (folks contributing the most will be noted as PBY Angels in our December Newsletter)
  2. We will be giving a $1 per person to Bering Omega for each person that takes a class on Monday, November 8th or on Thanksgiving Day.   There is no additional cost to take those classes.  We will simply make a donation on your behalf just for doing yoga on those days! PLEASE come out and support this, one of many important causes, at the holidays!
Bering Omega will provide donation sheets.  You may donate by credit card, check or cash.  All checks should be made out to Bering Omega Community Services.  Thank you in advance!

Student of the Month - Carolyn

Carolyn began her yoga journey in 1993.  She practiced yoga at home via VHS during her second pregnancy (labor and delivery were so much easier!!).  After a life-changing car accident in 1999, she began practicing earnestly.  For 10 years, Hatha yoga brought her so much happiness, that she taught beginning yoga at several locations.  Her favorite gig was teaching yoga to Pearland High School drama kids.

Five years ago, she took her first Bikram class on South Boulevard, in Houston.  She was hooked.   Friends and family thought she was nuts to drive from Alvin to Houston, but she knew that nothing else would do.  After enjoying Taz as a teacher, Carolyn was thrilled to have a studio open in Pearland.  The opportunity to work at this studio was the icing on the cake.  She is so grateful for Taz, the PBY staff and the fabulous students.  Carolyn's motto, "Do yourself and the world a favor - practice yoga."

Posture of the Month -
Pranayama Deep Breathing

So this is a big one that we are tackling, and we will not even scratch the surface of it's importance.  Prana, Sanskrit for life force energy (breath).  Pranayama, the first thing we do in our daily practice of Bikram Yoga.  We know the drill, it warms the body from the inside out, sets the tone for the class.  We hear these things in class, every class.  This is what is really key about Pranayama though...it takes our breathing back to a belly breathing format that was native to us when we were infants.  It re-teaches us how to be in control of our breath which allows us to control our mind and thereby, our life.

Here is a brief physiological explanation of a very intangible concept.  When we do not focus on our breathing we breathe as most people do, using 10% of our lungs, the very topmost part of the lungs.  When we do Standing Deep Breathing Posture we roll our shoulders back, opening the chest cavity.  We breathe in which engages the diaphragm.  The diaphragm is a band of muscles under the lungs, above the abdomen.  When the diaphragm contracts it pulls the chest cage down opening the chest cavity for more capacity of the lungs.  The negative pressure pulls oxygen down into the lungs.  If done properly, 100% of the lung capacity can be filled.  Upon exhale the diaphragm relaxes, and the positive pressure naturally pushes the air out.  And did you know that when you make a snoring sound upon inhale you are compressing your diaphragm even more than just inhaling alone?  And did you also know that when you make the loud "HA" sound upon exhale that you are also contracting your diaphragm, literally squeezing all the stale air out of your lungs?

Breathing in slowly consciously taps into our parasympathetic nervous system.  This is the part of the nervous system that controls our "flight or fight" mode.  In other words, it tells the whole body to relax or panic based on the input it is receiving.  In this case it relaxes due to the deep breathing.

It has become common to be unaware of the the role of the lungs (and the amount of oxygen they take in).  Shallow breathing anatomically causes your body to be in a state of distress.  Short, shallow breaths say to your body, "Be ready to sprint away at any time."  That is the physiological message that your body is receiving - be stressed.

This is the key.  You learn to control your ability to handle stressful situations in and out of the hot room by learning how to control your breath.

Pranayama takes practice because if the lungs have been conditioned to shallow breathing then they will need to rebuild themselves to be able to expand fully.  If you find that you struggle with extreme forward bending or extreme backward bending postures this is a message from your body that you need to focus more on your Pranayama and build your lung strength.

Here are a few tips to make sure you are really allowing your body to maximize this posture.  Roll your shoulders back and stand up straight. Tuck your buttocks under, contract your legs.  Stay conscious of the fact that you are inhaling to capacity and exhaling just as much - visualize this.  Look at yourself in the mirror to begin. When you drop your head back, let your eyes look up and back on the ceiling to pull your chest up. When your head comes forward make sure you look into your eyes again.  Don't look at the floor or you are collapsing your chest cavity.  This next suggestion is critical - GO SLOWLY.  So many people crank their head up and back as if it were a light switch.  This posture only works if you go slowly and concentrate on the movements and the breath.  It is like a ballet.  Finesse it.  If you are rushing, you are cheating yourself out of your postures.  Why would you intentionally want to come to class to work that hard and not really get the benefits?

There are a million other things to say about Pranayama.  Suffice it to say that it is critical to learn proper deep breathing for the rest of your practice...and your life.
