In Nigeria, West Africa, "A woman's head tie is her glory." As you can see from our lovely student, Yegi, her head tie is surely her glory. Yegi made this head tie herself.
Yegi started Bikram Yoga on June 6th, 2010. She immediately began her 30 Day Challenge. She will finish on July 4th - Happy Independence Day to her! |

Independence Day Reflection
The 4th of July is a perfect time to reflect on how lucky we all are.
When I began to practice Bikram, I was so moved by it that I decided to change my entire life to become a Bikram Instructor and Studio Owner.
As an American I have the freedom to choose what I wish to dedicate my life to. All Americans do.
That is worth celebrating.
Many Blessings,

Welcome to Our Newest Teacher!
Originally from Canada, I have lived in America for almost 15 years. I spent over 10 years in New Orleans. I consider it home.
I practiced Ashtanga Yoga for 13 years. I was in Houston after Hurricane Katrina, and I could not find a place to practice Ashtanga close to me so I reluctantly tried Bikram. Initially I did not like it...it was so hard!! I continued to practice however, giving it a chance, and what a blessing it turned out to be!!
I have spent the past few years traveling and living abroad. It has been wonderful to find Bikram in almost every European and Asian city that I have that I've been in. After 4 years I decided to take my passion for this yoga to a deeper place and go to Teacher Training in Mexico in 2008.
After training I furthered my knowledge and strength as a teacher working under a Senior Teacher in Boston. From there I continued to travel, returning to Europe. I taught in both Ireland and London. I then returned to America to teach in New York, New Orleans and now Houston.
As a student of this yoga, I continue to be challenged in my own understanding of the body-mind connection. As a teacher of this yoga, I hope to guide students in a safe, yet fun and challenging way. I try to bring a sense of humor coupled with passion. I hope that we can inspire each other to always grow. I look forward to seeing you in the hot room! |

The Healing Power of Yoga
Reprinted from the Pearland Journal on June 17th, 2010
A recent study from the University of Rochester Medical Center indicates yoga improves sleep and the overall quality of life for cancer patients and survivors. Shown here student Kathleen Sharp and instructor, Taz. |
For months or even years after painful chemotherapy and radiation treatments are done, many cancer survivors say they are haunted by insomnia and a lack of energy.
Yoga may provide some relief, experts now say. According to a recent study of cancer survivors, sleep and fatigue problems improved for people who practiced yoga at twice the rate of people who did not.
Taz Trevino, owner of the Bikram Yoga studio in west Pearland said many cancer survivors who have attended her "hot yoga" classes said they slept better and had more energy.
"What happens with cancer patients is they are taking so many medicines that are toxic to the system," Trevino said. "Our classes are held in a heated environment. So, while you're in there you're sweating. As you're sweating you're purging those toxins from your system. Your liver, your spleen, you kidneys, everything starts to work more efficiently. As it purges those toxins, brings them to the surface, eliminates them from the body, then you start feeling a healing effect on the body."
In yoga classes, participants focus on stretching exercises and deep meditative breathing. Trevino say it's a practice designed to meld mind and body.
"Yoga is such a healing way of exercise that many people, not just cancer survivors find it helps with insomnia and other health problems," Trevino said. "Because you are working mind and body, I find I have a peace you don't have under normal circumstances."
Now, experts say there's real evidence yoga can offer health benefits to cancer survivors. Karen Mustian, Ph.D., M.P.H. of the University of Rochester Medical Center recently published results from a study she conducted of 410 cancer survivors.
At the start, Mustian reported eight out of ten participants said they suffered from insomnia and chronic fatigue. Over a four week period, half of the participants practiced a gentle form of hatha and restorative yoga twice a week. At the end, those in the yoga group said they had fewer sleep problems, less fatigue and an improved quality of life. The yoga group also reported they were able to reduce the use of sleeping medications. The non-yoga group reported an increased use of sleep medications and poorer sleep quality.
"Yoga is a safe and simple technique that can have multiple benefits for survivors who are looking for solutions," Mustian said in a released statement. "This is great news for cancer survivors who deal with persistent and debilitating side effects from their cancer and its treatments long after their primary therapy ends."
