Assalamualaikum and Greetings of Peace,
Greetings!
As we approach the 10th anniversary of September 11th, our hearts are filled with sadness for the victims, their families and for the tragedy our country has endured since then. September 11th was a shocking awakening for us as Americans. We realized that our ignorance, led to dangerous stereotyping. However, as a nation we have risen above the calamity and have shown that out of adversity, can come strength. Muslim Women's Alliance was founded on the notion that we have to build powerful and positive relationships between our communities, learning about one another's faith and traditions, working side by side to participate in community service together. MWA believes that collaboration must be founded on dialogue, building a mutual respect and participating in collaborative service for the common good.
With our confidence in the strength of direct interaction we have worked together with people from diverse backgrounds: During our Women Ambassadors of Unity Program, we collaborate with faith based organizations like Fourth Presbyterian Church; annually we work side by with parishioners from Lady of Sorrows Basilica to serve breakfast to the homeless, we support the Jewish-Muslim Community Building Initiative (JMCBI) sharing an evening of dialogue during Iftar in the Synagogue. This Sunday we are honored once again to work with our community partners Church Women United, National Council of Jewish Women and Temple Judea-Mizpah to engage in an afternoon of community building (event details below).
MWA applauds our members for their commitment to get to know our neighbors and friends from diverse backgrounds. Even our small acts of kindness make a huge difference! You have inspired us with stories of making care packages for the sick in your community, establishing a tradition to visit neighbors to share Eid treats and participating in your neighborhood school and civic groups.
Already this year, MWA members have contributed over 1,200 hours of hands-on community service hours and close to $35K in donations to help the needy, regardless of their faith or background. You are helping MWA realize its vision, with the understanding that when we truly know one another, it is only then that we can work on building a sincere sense of community, full of true care and concern for all of the human family. Thank you for doing a huge part in moving our country forward, to build and ensure an America that will fulfill our unified dream.
On behalf of the MWA Board, I hope that September 11th will be a time of meaningful reflection and remembrance. And as fellow Americans, may we continue to build a mutual understanding, trust and respect for all.
Sincerely,
Anisha
