September 27, 2010, Sacramento, CA - Life Skills Training
and Educational Programs, Inc (LifeSTEPS), is asking its youth and senior
residents the age-old question, "Do you know where your lunch comes from?"
On Saturday, October 9, 2010, 40
residents from Sacramento and Woodland are going to find out on an
intergenerational field trip to Durst Organic Growers in Esparto. LifeSTEPS is bringing together two of its most
vulnerable populations, children and seniors, to experience firsthand how
eating healthy starts at the farm and how much fun it can be, of course.
The
Durst Organic Growers Field Trip will be an adventure for youth, seniors and
LifeSTEPS staff members alike. The day's
activities revolve around learning about organic farming and sharing new
experiences with one another. For
many of the children, this will be their first visit to a farm, experiencing
the earth and nature in a brand new way and discovering that food comes from
the ground and not a plastic wrapper! For
our senior clients, the trip will be a chance to release their inner child and
maybe even bring back childhood memories. Executive Director Beth Southorn
comments, "This field trip is all about giving our kids a chance to be in
nature as well as benefit from the wisdom of our senior population." And
as an additional bonus, Durst Farm Owners Jim and Deborah Durst have invited
each guest to pick and bring home the biggest pumpkin they can carry.
Since
the early 80's, Jim and Deborah Durst have been growing and distributing some
of the best tasting organic produce under the brand name "Hungry
Hollow" and "Durst Organic Growers." Durst Organic Growers, Inc., strongly believes in farming techniques that build soil fertility while
balancing wildlife and insect ecology.
The farm practices are based on the maxim "Feed the soil and the
soil will feed the plants."
The
Durst Organic Growers Field Trip is just one example of the community building
activities made possible through partnerships facilitated by LifeSTEPS. LifeSTEPS
is a nonprofit, charitable organization that provides professional social and
supportive services to 44,000 individuals living in 162 affordable housing properties
throughout California. As a provider of
wrap around services, LifeSTEPS offers confidential case management, youth
programs, educational opportunities and community building activities, such as
this, designed to help all low income residents successfully maintain and enjoy
housing.
This
event will take place on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Durst Organic Growers
located at 26100 County Road 16 in Esparto, California. Lunch will be served at noon and activities
will take place between 1pm and 3pm. For
