Since
our first newsletter just one year ago, LifeSTEPS has added an additional
thirty-four housing communities, bringing our total current sites to
one-hundred and sixty-two. This is certainly an exciting time for us as we extend
the reach of our services to touch the lives of even more individuals. To support this growth, and
to continue the high standard of service you have come to expect, the LifeSTEPS
Board of Directors recently voted to add additional staff positions and staff
training.
At
the request of Executive Director Beth Southorn, the Board added a Director of
Program Operations for Northern California, a District Manager for the
Sacramento and San Diego areas and an Executive Assistant to support the
Executive Management team. Through a series of regional staff retreats, we came
together to reflect upon and reinforce our mission, vision, core beliefs and
values. The values we uphold are integrity, respect, personal growth, empowerment and innovation.
Our staff is excited about the direction the agency is taking, and is grateful
for the additional support which enables each of us to impact lives in a
more powerful way. The LifeSTEPS Emergency Assistance Program is in full
swing and the staff continues to identify clients at risk of eviction and
create opportunities for sustaining housing through intensive case management,
education, and financial assistance. Read more> |

FUND DEVELOPMENT LifeSTEPS has secured an anonymous gift of $20,000
to be used to help our at-risk clients avoid eviction. This is above and beyond
the $30,000 received during the previous quarter. Since the start of 2010, we
have provided rental assistance to 23 households, home to 56 individuals that
might otherwise have had to relocate due to unpaid rents. An additional nine households have been
approved and will be funded within the next 30 days. Rita's story is just one example of how
residents are experiencing relief because of LifeSTEPS' Emergency Assistance Program.

Rita, a Vintage
Knolls resident, met with her LifeSTEPS Director of Social Services in August
after experiencing multiple financial setbacks. First, her insurance provider stopped
covering the compression garments which Rita, a cancer survivor, wears to
prevent swelling and discomfort. That alone was a significant expense, but then
her car started leaking oil. From the
very first case management session, it was clear that Rita was a very
resourceful person and not used to asking for help. However, she feared that her situation would
get worse if not remedied quickly. The
unexpected expenses put her at risk of being short on her rent. The LifeSTEPS Director of Social Services
provided detailed information about our Emergency Assistance Program to Rita and submitted a request on her behalf. Within a couple of weeks, Rita received wonderful news- she was approved
to receive assistance that would cover a portion of her rent. Rita is now doing very well. Her rent was paid on time, the necessary car repairs have been made, and the assistance allowed her to purchase the
compression garments she needs. Not
only does LifeSTEPS provide rental assistance to clients in need, we are able
to help with medical equipment, dental work and special needs that otherwise
might go unmet. Through our partnership
with Change a Life Foundation, we continue to help those that have fallen into
difficult circumstances through no fault of their own. Our most recent award, for $30,486, will help 11 individuals to overcome dental, mobility, and vision and auditory challenges. Recently, a
particularly meaningful gift has been allocated to provide gymnastics lessons
to a young girl who has suffered the loss of both parents as the result of a
violent crime. Additionally, a cancer
survivor is receiving the medical care she needs after being awarded monies to
pay her monthly medical premiums. As
always, LifeSTEPS is honored to partner with Change a Life Foundation and the
life changing activities that occur as a result of their generous gifts. |
MAKING A DIFFERENCE Elaine and Arthur's Reading Success
Elaine is an energetic participant in the After
School Program at Lucretia Gardens, a property owned and managed by the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Clara. One of Elaine's fifth grade class
requirements is to read a book each day, which frustrated her since she has never
liked reading. Her parents speak limited English; therefore, Elaine has a
difficult time practicing reading at home. As a result, she has been
struggling to keep up with her peers. That is, until she joined the
LifeSTEPS After School Program. During one session, noticing Elaine's
discouragement with her reading requirement, the LifeSTEPS Director of Social
Services, Arianne, pulled out a stack of books. Elaine's face lit up when
she saw the book Arthur by Marc Brown.

IN THE COMMUNITY
TARGET Summer Reading
In 2009, LifeSTEPS secured five Target Early Childhood Reading Grants designated for use at sites located in Southern California. To foster a love of reading and encourage
children to read together with their families, LifeSTEPS facilitated reading
circles followed by group discussions and related craft activities during after
school program sessions this summer. Funding was used to purchase new books for
home libraries, nutritious snacks, creative supplies and rewards for participation. Rancho Niguel Reading Program

Each site also hosted a "Back to School"
event, where parents expressed excitement over the reading program and enjoyed quality
time with their children. LifeSTEPS Program Coordinators will continue to
encourage reading by providing opportunities for reading circles and
storytelling throughout the school year.
Recently we were awarded $22,000
to host similar programs at 11 more sites throughout the state.
2010 Reading Program Sites:
Rancho Niguel, Villa Cortina, Casa Grande, Casa Bella, Bella Vista
2011 Reading Program Sites:
Casa La Paz, Suncrest, Rodeo Village, La Entrada, Brisa Del Mar, Valle
Verde, Parkview Village, Terracina at Park Meadows, Cottage Estates,
Terracina at Santa Rosa, and Terracina at Springlake. _______________________________________________________________________
Neighborhood Networks Week A
Successful Past, A Promising Future
Since
1995, Neighborhood Networks has been promoting self-sufficiency and access to
technology. The California Neighborhood
Networks Consortium exists to establish and maintain a community-wide
partnership of organizations that serve affordable housing communities.
In
honor of Neighborhood Networks Week, LifeSTEPS hosted events at various
properties during the week of August 2-6.
Special activities included, After School Program Open Houses, computer
training on Get Connected Day, and social activities where neighbors spent time
mingling.
The seniors at Horizons at Indio (pictured here with LifeSTEPS Regional
Director of Social Services, Zoila Parodi) enjoy learning about computers and
finding resources on-line during the Get Connected training session.

COMMUNITY NEWS
LifeSTEPS
is pleased to announce that we will be expanding our reach to serve the
homeless by partnering with United Outreach of El Dorado County. We
will support the United Outreach mission to serve
to empower the homeless people of El Dorado County. While United Outreach oversees a Transitional
Shelter Program, they also offer a more traditional service to the homeless
with its Voucher Incentive Program. It is a short-term emergency food and
shelter program that provides up to 30 days' stay in a local motel, grocery
vouchers, and access to the Food Bank of El Dorado County. Like LifeSTEPS,
programs are based on the concept of empowerment rather than dependence.

EMPLOYEE AWARDS
In August, LifeSTEPS
Director of Social Services Rebecca Delgado was recognized by the California
State Assembly for her leadership in organizing National Night Out events at
five properties in Elk Grove and Sacramento. Rebecca comments, "National
Night Out is a symbolic, nationwide crime prevention event that builds bridges
between communities and law enforcement. This is a great way for
neighbors to gather together and show their appreciation for all that law
enforcement does to support and protect the community." A special
thank you to Rebecca for her dedication to the people and communities she
serves.
