Greetings!
On June 9th, LifeSTEPS' Board President Craig Gillett and I attended the 13th
annual Affordable Housing Congressional Forum in Washington, DC. Members and guests, representing every
aspect of the affordableBeth Southorn with Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Attorney Michelle Garcia, Davis and Harman LLP. | housing industry, gathered to discuss the current issues facing the affordable housing market. There was a lively dialogue on the need for affordable housing, the complexities of how to provide affordable housing, and the continual effects of the economic climate. In spite of the
economic downturn, it is interesting to note that throughout the country, the jobs
for building affordable housing communities are some of the only jobs that have continued Beth Southorn shakes hands with Congresswoman and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

high and homelessness is expensive in terms of dollars, as well as safety for the

FUND DEVELOPMENT
LifeSTEPS is pleased to announce that we have
received an anonymous gift in the generous amount of $30,000 to fund our statewide
emergency assistance program. Currently
we are providing service to 155 communities throughout California, including 104
multi-family sites and 51 senior sites.
Our wrap-around service for residents demonstrates that when people work
together, great things can happen. LifeSTEPS is committed to our tradition of
joining forces with property owners, property management, community partners, and residents to
make our communities a great place to call home. Recipient of LifeSTEPS' Emergency Assistance.
 | Working together, we are developing creative
solutions that maximize human potential while helping at-risk clients maintain
stable housing. One of our recent
recipients of emergency assistance, a resident in
Sacramento, was stunned to learn that he had spent over $600 on late fees
during the past year. With the help of his
LifeSTEPS Director of Social Services and $350 in rental assistance, this
resident has started paying his rent on time for the first time in two
years. In addition, together they created
a schedule for paying his bills that will eliminate late payments all together. LifeSTEPS continues to meet community needs in
many ways, including the provision of quality after school programming, adult
education opportunities, community building events, emergency assistance, and
in-kind donations. With the generous contributions from our partners, LifeSTEPS
provides tangible solutions that assist our residents in achieving success. |
IN THE COMMUNITY
This
Safe Touch Workshop at the Brisa Del Mar Apartments is the second in a series
of five scheduled for family sites in San Diego. Sessions are facilitated
by LifeSTEPS Director of Social Services Lizeth Ma and a few of our guest
presenters have included Board Certified
Internal Medicine Dr. Amish Patel and Nurse Practitioner Amie Dejesus. After an
educational video regarding child abuse prevention, participants engage
in a group discussion about the signs of abuse and the types of appropriate touching. Adults and children are taught about the importance
of reporting suspicious behavior and how to go about reporting inappropriate behavior and abuse. LifeSTEPS gratefully acknowledges the expertise of our guest speakers and the McCarthy Family Foundation whose generous funding made this program possible.
The McCarthy Family Foundation is committed to enhancing the health, welfare, education, and safety of
communities in San Diego county.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Something to Sing About
Joe and his wife, Louise, lived together at Vintage
Canyon Apartments in Brea until Louise's health became such that she was moved
into a nearby assisted living facility. Without Louise by his side, Joe
felt lonely and was at risk of depression. During a meeting with Evie, his
Director of Social Services, she encouraged Joe to attend social events in the
clubhouse and helped him to make arrangements for Louise to attend as
well. Joe has since become an active participant at property events and
even joined the Activities Committee. At one Activities Committee
meeting, Joe expressed an interest in singing as a fun social activity. Three other men found the idea intriguing and together they formed a singing
quartet. When they performed at a community "Social Hour" they
were warmly received by their friends and neighbors. When two of the men
dropped out due to health issues, Joe recruited a few ladies. Now they
have a quintet that performs regularly. Joe's voice is lovely and he is
great with show tunes. He has amazing recall for the lyrics and everyone
enjoys listening to him. Joe has expressed his gratitude to Evie for her
continued encouragement; without her support he thinks he may have fallen into
a deep depression. As a result of LifeSTEPS programs, Joe is staying
engaged in his community and bringing joy to others.
Persistence
Pays Off in Advocating for Children's Needs
Emily
has lived at Summit Ridge Apartments in Banning with her mom and three siblings
since 2008. During the recent school
year, Emily's mom, Jill, was concerned that Emily was falling behind her peers
in the first grade. When LifeSTEPS
learned that Emily was having problems, our Program Coordinator began providing
one-on-one homework assistance during the after school program. In addition, LifeSTEPS suggested extracurricular activities for the family that would create learning
opportunities in her home. In
spite of the assistance, Emily was still at risk of repeating the first
grade. Read more > |

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Terry Marino is a dedicated LifeSTEPS
volunteer. Since February 2009, she has been facilitating the after
school program at the Rancho Niguel Apartments in Laguna
Hills. The children and parents appreciate the homework assistance, arts
and crafts, and educational games Terry provides during each session. As
many of the parents at this property are monolingual Spanish speakers, the
LifeSTEPS after school program creates an opportunity for the children to
receive homework help that may not be possible at home. The children are
blossoming and some have even made the honor roll at their school. They
frequently greet Terry with reports cards in hand to share their exciting
academic achievements. Not only is Terry a valued volunteer, she is a
resident at Vintage Shores Apartments, a senior community in San Clemente where
LifeSTEPS also provides services. We are privileged to have such a
competent and enthusiastic volunteer as part of our team. |
