Connecting Business with Social Networking
This past March, Michigan State University and the Eli Broad School of Business sponsored a presentation by John Hill on the connection between social networking and business. Mr. Hill is Director of Career Services for the M.S.U. Alumni Association. His presentation, "Taking Your Online Connections Offline for Corporate Success" was a wonderful overview of the popular social networking sites, along with companion sites that help organize information.
Confused on the approach for the various sites? Mr. Hill presented a simple analogy; think of Twitter as the water cooler, LinkedIn as the boardroom and Facebook as the bar.
He also demonstrated the tools within the sites. Looking forward, Mr. Hill offered several examples of how marketing is adapting to consumers using smart phones.
Mr. Hill offers this presentation through various organizations and his expertise is extremely valuable for anyone trying to better understand the business benefits of social networking.

Digital Active Online chosen for Website Develpment
Digital Active Online was chosen to create a website for the re-developed Durant Hotel building in Flint, Michigan.
The historic building has been vacant since the early 1970's. Its resurrection as a landmark property will provide downtown Flint with much needed housing for the University of Michigan Flint and Mott Community College campuses. It will also serve as a symbol for the downtown's rebirth. The project will deliver over 90 lofts, with the first floor serving as commercial property.
The website for the Durant building will feature online leasing applications, floor plans and amenities. The website will also be integrated with Digital Active Online's content management system and property management tools.
"The website is just one component of a very complex development project. The tools the website will provide are going to be essential in helping us stay organized." - Kevin Prater, Developer.

Ignite Lansing 3.0 Goes Global
The March 2010 version of Ignite Lansing 3.0 was once again a sell out success! The event was hosted in the historic Knapp's building in downtown Lansing. The Ignite formula is simple: Five minutes and fifteen slides.
Fog machines and laser lights revved up the crowd as over 500 attendees enjoyed a wide, and we do mean wide, variety of presentations. The presentations went from the practical, "Tips and Tricks to Make Life a Little Easier" to the humorous, "Why Living With Depression is Hilarious."
Before the presentations began, City of Lansing Council Vice President, Kathie Dunbar took the stage with a life-sized cutout of Google co-founder, and former East Lansing resident, Larry Page. The life-sized, look-a-like produced a round of chuckles among the techies, but the purpose was to announce Lansing's bid to become a test community for a Google project to build fiber networks that would deliver Internet connections of over 1 gigabite per second. The fiber-to-the-home connections would be over 100 times faster than most Internet connections.

The Ignite concept was launched in Seattle and has spread throughout the world. The Lansing event was one of sixty-five Ignite events across six continents during the second week of March. Using social media and local sponsors, the marketing budget is next to zero. Digital Active Online was a proud sponsor of Ignite Lansing 3.0, and we look forward to the next event. When is Ignite Lansing 4.0? No word yet, but stay tuned as tickets will again be limited.

ActiveApp: Olympus Media
The ActiveApp spotlight this month falls on Olympus Media. The Atlanta-based outdoor advertiser operates in five states, using an ActiveOffice system to manage inventory, sales, operations, human resources and more. Using the ActiveOffice foundation, the system has been customized to pull information from existing databases, allowing staff to quickly find information on billboard locations. With an information mash-up including Charting Pro (outdoor advertising software), Google Maps API and an image database, Olympus staff can access specific information on every location. The display offers everything from traffic information to a photo of the location. For certain LED digital display locations, where video cameras are mounted and pointed at the LED billboard, a link can be clicked to show the displayed advertiser in real time. The ActiveOffice system allows sales staff to click from the display into the contract generator, which passes the information from the database and creates a contract for the client in a PDF file format. This ActiveApp has eliminated the need to access multiple databases, reduced human error and created tremendous efficiencies in producing a sale. "We could not be happier with the way our company Intranet has come together. We are already seeing a return on our investment with a tremendous difference in the efficiency, accuracy and productivity of our employees. Our new system has received praise and compliments from our sales force right up to our executive team." - Mike Nelson, Vice President / Sales and Marketing, Olympus Media LLC |
