The Power of Google Analytics
by Todd Ross
Director of Business Development

There is an old adage in advertising, "I waste half of my advertising budget... I just don't know which half."  By tracking visitors to your site, you solve this dilemma by learning exactly how many people are visiting your website.

Over the years, the task of tracking website visits has changed immensely. As websites and their functions evolved, so did landscape of web analytics. While there are pros and cons to the various products available, Google Analytics has quickly gained a huge market share with their free service.

As I meet with clients and potential clients, Google Analytics is either used or considered in almost every case. Free is hard to beat, especially with a huge market share. The set-up is simple, requiring only a Google account and adding a few lines of code to your existing website. We use the system to track visitors to digitalactive.com and each week I learn even more detailed information. This helps in planning, designing and tracking sites that refer visitors to our site. Google Analytics is an extremely powerful tool in measuring the effectiveness in advertising for any group who is pushing customers or clients to their website.

ActiveOffice Connects Olympus Media
Olympus Media LLC, of Atlanta, Georgia, will launch its new corporate intranet, connecting their offices in Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Indiana. The system, developed by Digital Active Online, uses the ActiveOffice foundation along with custom applications specifically developed for Olympus Media's business processes. The departments of sales, human resources, creative, operations and real estate have collaborative areas to share information within and between market offices, as well as the corporate headquarters.

The sales section of the system uses online forms to accelerate the sales process and ensure accuracy in client contracts. Sales representatives use a login to access contract forms. The online forms are a step-by-step process. By entering the display number, information specific to the billboard is auto-populated into the contract. The data is pulled from Charting Pro, a charting system used by Olympus Media to schedule billboards.  The online forms contain:
  • Location
  • Type of Board
  • Monthly Rate
  • Calculator for Production Costs
  • Client and Agency Contact Information
The online form also displays a Google Map interface with the map location and a corresponding photograph of the billboard.

The initial launch of the Olympus Media intranet is the first phase of development by Digital Active Online. Additional areas will be developed in late 2010.

OAAI Conference
Digital Active was pleased to attend the annual conference for the Outdoor Advertising Association of Illinois last week in Chicago. The event was an opportunity to meet with current clients from the Peoria and Champaign markets of Adams Outdoor Advertising; it also provided a chance to connect with other OAAI members. The downtown Hyatt's Grand Ballroom was the perfect venue, as speakers offered insight on the outdoor advertising industry and business in general. Myron Laible, president of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, spoke on the issues facing the industry on a national level. Mr. Laible announced a new partnership between the OAAA and the FBI in a program to utilize the extensive network of digital billboards in capturing fugitives. The program is an extension of numerous state and local programs that have been successful across the country.

The featured speaker of the OAAI conference was Rob Jackson, Principal/Creative Director of Extra Credit Projects. Mr. Jackson's presentation was an amazing multimedia display of his innovative approach to outdoor advertising. His approach spans the outdoor mediums and often integrates with guerrilla marketing. While his talent is breathtaking, his focus remains on the goal and target of the campaigns.

Todd Ross and Rose Trader from OAAIThe conference concluded with a wonderful reception at the Mid America Club on the 80th floor of the AON Center. Digital Active would like to thank Rose Trader, Executive Director of OAAI, for being a great host and making us feel so welcome.

Carbon2Markets Leader Presents on Climate Change
Dr. David SkoleDr. Dave Skole, Michigan State University professor of forestry, offered a presentation to a group of MSU alumni on January 27. "Climate Conservation and Livelihoods: Challenges and Opportunities in a Carbon-Constrained World", was an overview on the environmental and economical issues in climate change.

Digital Active Online developed the website used by Dr. Skole and his group, carbon2markets.org. The website is used by farmers, traders and partner agencies around the world. The topics included:
  • Climate change science supporting a consensus that it is a real threat
  • The opportunities in policies aimed at mitigation of climate change
  • Developing win-win solutions to climate change as well as poverty alleviation through a single intervention: carbon sequestration in agro-forestry in developing countries

Dr. Skole offered several points that went beyond the political rhetoric associated with "Cap and Trade," showing how the roots of the market-driven economic model go back to the administration of President Reagan. The presentation was sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association - Mid-Michigan Club, and hosted by the MSU Federal Credit Union.

Dr. Skole won a Nobel Prize as a member of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007. This is the second Nobel Prize winner Digital Active Online has had the honor of working with, the first being Dr. Norman Borlaug, the father of the "green revolution" and founder of the wheat research facility, CIMMYT.
