From Michael...
The last few days in Saratoga have been great. Our celebration for the DRF/Old Friends magazine was terrific. Rosie Napravnik, JJ Castellano, Edgar Prado, Dennis Brida, breeder Sanford Bacon and Richard Schosberg came to the Washington Inn to sign copies. Rosie brought a saddle, donated by Julien Leparoux, for a future auction. The Saratoga Brewery donated beer and the Crush and Cask gave us a very generous bargain on the wine.
All the retirees are doing great at Cabin Creek. Carol Farmer and Nick Zito plan to visit Commentator.
The other day I had great conversations about Old Friends with John Oxley, D. Wayne Lukas, Bill Parcells, Wallenda's trainer, Frank Alexander, Steve Byk, racing executive Lou Raffetto and NY Giants owner, Chris Mara (whose daughter played the title role in the American version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo). And, to top it all off, Rosie won the feature for Todd Pletcher and an ecstatic group from Stonestreet. Everyone adored the magazine. Personally, I think it's the best communication tool we've ever had. Frank Alexander was in tears reading about Precisionist.
The reaction to Old Friends in Saratoga has completely flipped. People are actively complimentary and supportive. If you get to the races for The Travers visit the Old Friends table behind the jockey's quarters. You can meet Joanne and the dedicated band of volunteers along with Kentucky representatives, Barbara and Beth. And, they'll have plenty of the new magazines available. Special thanks to Joe Bokan at the Washington Inn for allowing us to take advantage of his gracious hospitality for free. Without him, we couldn't afford to make the trip and share these horse's stories with an even wider group of fans. |

Aug. 21st - Old Friends at Cabin Creek Celebrates Thunder Rumble's 20th Anniversary Travers Win
Old Friends at Cabin Creek will celebrate Thunder Rumble's 1992 Travers win on Tuesday, August 21st from noon-2pm with a party in his honor. The 23 year old retiree who now calls Cabin Creek home still holds the record for the fastest time since his '92 win and is the first NY bred to win the Travers since 1867. Tour hours will be from 10am to 4pm. Special guest Richie Migliore and caricature artist, Phil Singer will be on hand. Five Points Deli, Saratoga Crackers, Malika Fair Mind and Fair Trade Gift Shop will display their wares. Connie Bush, a local photographer whose photos are available at Frankie Flores' Gallery, will have her beautiful photo of Thunder Rumble for purchase, as well as note cards and photos of Cabin Creek's retirees. Entertainment will be provided by guitarist, fiddle, mandolin player and vocalist, Tim Wechgalaer, a well-known local musician. There will also be a live auction halter sale and guided tours of the farm.

Sept 8th - Zippin' for Zippy Chippy!
Old Friends Day at the Louisville Mega Cavern
Weeeeeeee! On Sept. 8th Old Friends is going Zippin' in honor of our summer guest, Zippy Chippy, the losingest horse in history. Zippy is on loan to us from our New York farm, Cabin Creek. We are having a zipline day at the Louisville Mega Cavern. Help us raise funds by making a monetary pledge of your choice (minimum of $5) to one of our Zippy Zipliners. Old Friends office manager Sylvia Stiller is leading the charge! Also zipping will be Marti McGinnis of Happy Art/Iota McHippus, Old Friends tour guides Teri Haverfield, Ellen Zehnder, Nick Newman, Carol Ayers, and our volunteers Linda Spears and Kelly Eggleton. Email Sylvia@oldfriendsequine.org if you'd like to make a pledge. There are five zip lines to complete along with several tricky rope bridges. It will be fun and challenging!
MEGA ZIPS is the only underground zipline adventure tour in the world. The fascinating cavern is a 100 acre former limestone pit mine that housed the largest civil defense shelter in Kentucky with provisions for 50,000 people to live underground for an extended period of time.
