From Michael... Saturday morning, the grass glistened. An overnight shower replenished some of the drought damage and every horse searched down every savory blade. Just after 10 am, the delivery truck arrived with nearly 19,000 copies of the Old Friends/Daily Racing Form magazine. Bill and Rick led a battalion of volunteers unloading each package and piling it neatly into the basement. Then, the fun. I knew, as the magazine evolved under the watchful eyes of DRF Marketing Director Mandy Minger and Old Friends' Barbara Fossum, that it would be a crucial chapter in the evolution of Thoroughbred retirement. But I had no idea it would be as glorious as it is. Not only is it a great tribute to our retirees but to all people and organizations dedicated to Aftercare. Barbara D. Livingston's evocative photographs, supplemented by works by Matt Wooley and Rick Capone, combined with the remarks of some of our volunteers and Jay Hovdey's column, make the magazine very, very special. Giving thanks to everyone seems inadequate because they've created something astonishing that will go along way toward guaranteeing great post-breeding and racing lives for these athletes. Every penny raised by the sale of the magazine goes toward providing health and welfare for our current retirees and opening the door for so many other deserving Thoroughbreds.
