Rejuvenating and Energizing Yourself through Chinese Medicine

By Vincent Koeller, LAc

Through the centuries, cultures have used natural rejuvenating techniques to provide long lasting health. History shows that most people continue with traditional ways, but others like Ponce de Leon, searched for mysterious secrets like the "fountain of youth." The truth is most of the time we have the tools right under our nose, although sometimes it takes many moons to discover.

We each possess a universe full of energy. Essentially we can view our energy as how we manage our time in this modern world of apps and digital dreams. With only 24 hours in a day, some of us feel we can use more. However, this is the mind leading us down the path of exhaustion and a long list of symptoms due to irregular eating and lifestyle habits. So where do we find balance and peace? It starts with our own personal search of ways to attain this.

The "tasks of life" can continuously make the body feel tense, anxious or even overwhelmed. If your energy is declining from this point of view, personal struggles and attachments can be the root of the problem. Other common signs that your energy is affected are reduced appetite, or abdominal fullness and fatigue after a meals. This is your body asking for help. In Chinese medicine, we look at our daily energy as a direct understanding of how our digestion is performing. Ancient Chinese doctors highlighted the importance of diet and emotional factors as contributors to the origin of disease. So tune in, listen and let your inner self be the witness.

Chinese medicine is a time-tested way of life dating back more than 3,000 years. The Chinese believed firmly in the activity of enhancing health and longevity by adopting methods of maintaining the body and mind, reducing stress, promoting health, and prolonging life. Oriental medicine utilizes acupuncture, herbal medicine, moderate exercise, and proper diet.  Incorporating these tools into your life is a great way to provide the rejuvenation we all seek.

Spring of 2011 has come and gone, and we are already well into the summer. Of course, with the change of climate we can expect the typical allergies, colds and perhaps even indigestion of seasonal foods. The practitioners at the Advanced Wellness Center are here to help you make a healthy transition from season to season.

Remember, the state of your health is dependent on every part of you: both mind and body. A holistic approach addresses the condition of your true state of being, while treating symptons only addresses one particular outward expression. This can be the case for any health issue, regardless of the scope or severity.

In this newsletter, we present an article regarding research, which shows that chiropractic care can be as beneficial as certain surgeries. The researchers stated, "This is the first randomized trial that directly compared chiropractic and back surgery." Besides spinal manipulation being less invasive than surgery, it was also shown that this form of treatment was dramatically less expensive, saving approximately $23,000 per patient successfully treated.

With this documented information, we encourage you to explore the benefits that holistic medicine has demonstrated to provide. We look forward to continuing our partnership with you in health, medicine, and lifestyle management. Let us prove to you that healthier people are happier people.

Chiropractic Proves Equally Beneficial as Surgery

By Mark deDubovay, DC, CTN

In a recent study, "Manipulation or Microdiskectomy for Sciatica?" from the October 2010 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, researchers concluded that spinal manipulation (as performed by a chiropractor) was just as effective as microdiskectomy for patients struggling with sciatica (pain, numbness, or weakness in one or both legs), secondary to lumber disk herniation.

Overall, 60 percent of patients who received chiropractic care benefited to the same degree as those who underwent surgery. Further, the 40 percent who could not be helped by chiropractic care, did go on to benefit to the same degree from the subsequent surgery as those who underwent surgery initially. "There was no detrimental effect cause by delaying their surgical treatment."

Eating Right to Look and Feel Great

By Rebecca Rebman, CTN

Looking and feeling great starts on the inside. In order to have beautiful glowing skin, lots of energy and stamina, your cells need to be healthy. In the same way a plant needs sun, water and nutrients to grow and survive, our bodies need nutrients, water, exercise and rest to thrive. Therefore, to ensure that we have healthy cells, we need to consume the right amounts and types of nutrients in the form of vitamins and minerals.

The easiest and most effective way to meet your nutrient needs is to eat a diet made up of fresh food. That means eating food that is closest to its original source. A great example would be eggs from a chicken. There isn't any change that occurs to the food from the chicken (the source of the egg) to your plate, thereby making eggs a great source of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Unfortunately, many diets consist of manufactured foods. These foods have been so highly processed that they contain none or very little of the nutrients essential to a healthy cell. Examples are breakfast cereals, crackers, bread, chips and even tortillas. These foods are commonly referred to as "empty calories" (lots of calories with no nutrient pay off).

Look how far away from the original source something like a generic wheat bread is:

  • Grow wheat (original source)
  • Harvest wheat
  • Transport to processing plant
  • Bleach and heat to kill any bacteria
  • Grind to desired consistency
  • Add in color to make it look like its original source.
  • Add back some nutrients lost in processing
  • Mix the ingredients and bake into bread
  • Bag and send to grocery store to sit on the shelf

So wheat bread, or any bread for that matter, is in fact a highly processed low-nutrient food, and does not supply us with the energy and vitality we need to feel great.

So stick to your lean proteins, fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. While providing your body with the essential nutrients you need to thrive, you will look and feel fabulous!

Sunburns Aren't the Only Summertime Nuisance

As summer days heat up, we like to spend more time outdoors to enjoy the sunny weather. Everyone is well aware of the dangers of the sun's radiation and the importance of applying sunscreen. However, there is another nuisance that many of us don't think about until after they happen: insect bites and stings.

There are many cases of complications and serious health risks associated with those "harm-free" bites.

The first serious risk to consider is an allergic reaction. For someone allergic to the bites or stings from these small creatures, any bite can pose a life threatening reaction. Apart from allergies, the transfer of diseases also poses a health risk.

If bitten or stung by an insect, be very careful to watch out for the following alarming symptoms.

  • Unusual swelling
  • Shortness of breathe
  • Sweating
  • Tightening of the throat
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash or hives distant from the bitten area

If you feel any of these symptoms, don't take it lightly. Be sure to get treatment as soon as possible.

Although severe complications can occur, most insect bites usually result in a minor skin reaction. A reddened area which isn't typically painful at first; but can create an itchy sensation which lasts for a couple of hours.

For these minimal reactions, we encourage you to use topical gels and/or sprays to avoid scratching. The Advanced Wellness Center offers a very effective and trusted cream, called Ssssting Stop, to help you minimize the reaction, and keep you from damaging your beautiful skin. Pick up a tube for just $7 the next time you come in.
