| A Healthy Springtime | |
By Vincent Koeller, LAc
As we make the shift into the spring season, a world of change takes place. From Mother Nature, to our own individual lives, we notice subtle changes in the environment and how it affects our health.
In Chinese Medicine, Spring is a time of "sprouting" as the yang energy (or sun) becomes more abundant during the day. We see this in nature as the flowers begin to bud and vegetation starts to thrive. So yes, it is time to get outside and enjoy the environment around you. But, climate of Spring is 'windy' and can stir up conditions like allergic rhinitis, asthma, skin rashes, frequent colds or arthritis.
The emotional component of the Spring energy is related to the liver, which if disturbed, can cause imbalance. Developing good life habits and regularity should be the focus during these months to ensure the stability of our emotions. An erratic lifestyle will disturb the mind and hinder digestion. Therefore, regular nutritious meals, rest and physical/mind exercises (i.e. yoga, meditation, tai chi, walking with friends...) will help cultivate energy moving into the summer.
Chinese Medicine encompasses acupuncture, herbal medicine, food as medicine, as well as exercise and healthy lifestyle choices to create a peaceful approach for each individual. Ask our acupuncturists how they can help guide you along your path and address your health concerns. Here are some healing tips for the season:
- Practice moderate outdoor exercise
- Wear comfortable clothes that keep you warm - the cold of the winter is still in the air
- Enjoy relaxed environments
- Consume dark green fruits and vegetables

The Athlete in All of Us |
By Paul Fuhrman, DC
As a sports chiropractor, I have had the opportunity to work on Ironman tri-athletes, professional surfers, and many "weekend warrior" runners, cyclists and CrossFitters. However, these elite athletes are a small minority of my overall patient base. The majority of my patients are office workers or stay-at-home moms, who may not have the need or want to run a marathon or do Olympic weight lifting. Believe it or not though, every one of us is an athlete. As athletes, we each have a sport. And, for each sport, it is imperative that we cross train to improve performance and prevent injuries. Cross training is meant to fix weak spots and correct imbalances. You may not think of a 60-year-old sedentary grandma as an athlete who should be cross training. But if her "sport" is picking up her 30-pound grandson regularly, some weightlifting involving squats and dead-lifts may not be a bad idea. In order to develop a cross training program, athletes need to be evaluated for imbalances, misalignments and weak points in their bodies. Over time, undetected misalignments can create uneven wear on the body (much like the tread on tires that aren't rotated regularly). This uneven wear will lead to injuries and decreased performance. Not being evaluated and treated by a chiropractor for these imbalances is like jumping into a Formula One race car without checking the tires - it's an accident waiting to happen! Whether your "sport" is carrying groceries, playing with the kids, jogging a couple of miles, or doing an Ironman, you owe it to yourself to work with the skilled chiropractors at the Advanced Wellness Center to find and fix these imbalances. A new way to detect these imbalances is through functional movement examinations. Get a free 15-minute functional movement exam.

Get in Step with Gait Analysis
| |
By Sese Novas, DC
One of the things we specialize in at the Advanced Wellness Center is gait analysis - that is, checking your stride and then making custom shoe inserts to correct foot imbalances.
Our sophisticated system scans your feet as you walk, creating images in both the static and striding positions. These images illustrate where the lines of pressure are, and how your foot moves from the moment your heel strikes the ground until your big toe pushes off for the next step. The scans are then sent electronically to the lab, which manufactures the custom orthotic shoe inserts.
