HealthCare Reform & Alternative
Medicine
|
From Mary Franck, Office Manager
Referring to healthcare reform as a "hot topic" would be a gross
understatement. The potential societal (and political) implications that
accompany an undertaking of this magnitude have jumped to the forefront of headline
news and daily conversation.
As a person interested in alternative approaches like chiropractic and acupuncture,
you may be wondering whether the reform is favorable to complementary
medicine.

In this issue of our newsletter, you will learn some great healthy weight loss and allergy tips for the summer months ahead. Also, our office manager, Mary Franck, provides an update on how healthcare reform might impact the alternative medicine industry.
The newest member of our team, Kristin Shay, DC, addresses how stress impacts your health, specifically causing pain throughout your body's tensest areas. Since stress plays such a vital role in our well-being, I wrote a similarly themed article for our blog about the mind/body connection. You can read it here.
If you have not visited our blog before, take a look now. It is an abundant resource of alternative medicine information.
I hope that you enjoy the content. Please feel free to contact us directly with any questions you may have. Have a healthy summer. Mark DeDubovay, DC Doctor of Chiropractic

The Skinny on Healthy Weight Loss

Are Headaches Stressing You Out?
|
By Kristin Shay, DC Or, maybe it's the other way around. It's
estimated that 20 percent of the population suffers from daily or weekly
headaches. Many of these people do not get relief and learn to live with the
pain. Pain
is never normal - for those of you living with headaches, there may be a solution. Tension
headaches are the most common type, which - as suggested by the name - come from
STRESS. When a person is dealing with high-level stressors, the sympathetic nervous system kicks into overdrive. When this system is constantly being activated, it
increases muscle activity. When you're stressed, do you ever notice that you're clenching or grinding your teeth? When at rest, your top teeth should not be touching your bottom teeth.
Muscle tension can cause jaw pain (pain around the TMJ - temporomandibular joint), neck soreness, a headache that feels like it is coming
from your sinuses or behind the eye(s), sensitive or ringing in the
ears, and/or phantom toothaches. Adding
to muscle tension, we use our jaws more than 5,000 times a day to talk,
eat and swallow. If you have a "bad bite" or malocclusion (which includes
overbites, openbites, crossbites and crowded or missing teeth), it complicates
the situation even further. If
you relate to any of the symptoms above, chiropractic care can help. An evaluation by one of our doctors will help
determine the cause of your pain. From there, an individual treatment plan is
constructed. Just
remember, it's never normal to feel pain. Life is short, there's no point to
spending any of it in pain!

Allergies and Other
Seasonal Threats
|
By Sese Novas, DC
Allergies differ from other
forms of illness, as they are the result of an over-active immune system. Allergies occur when the body initiates an immune response to a non-offending
substance such as pollen or a type of food. Click here for a few natural solutions to fight allergies and their symptoms.

A routine blood panel can provide information about: cholesterol levels; kidney, liver and gallbladder function; cardiovascular and
immune risks, as well as other disorders. Kirstin Shay, DC, and Paul Fuhrman, DC, are
offering a free functional blood chemistry
analysis of an existing blood panel report. Reports from blood tests performed within the last three months may be submitted for the free
analysis; otherwise, Drs. Shay or Fuhrman can order a new panel for the cost of
the lab work.
