Spring into Health with
Perfect Posture
|
By Michael Day, DC
How are you feeling after a long winter? A
tad sluggish? Did too much work or holiday foods steer you away from your
optimal health.
Spring is a time of awakening and
rejuvenation. A time to plant seeds, literally and figuratively, in our lives.
This spring, it's important for us to plant the seeds of a healthy body.
One way for you and your family to optimize
your health this season is through improved posture. Research released in the last
several years from all over the world shows that posture effects both brain
function and the spinal cord. Since the brain and spine control all function,
if they are stressed they cannot regulate the body to its fullest potential.
Excess flexion or forward bending of the
spine is linked with increased morbidity and mortality (chance for more
sickness and a shorter life span) in almost every study. However, posture is
more than just sitting up straight. Once the brain becomes accustomed to a
forward head position, or a rotated hip, it becomes a learned pattern in the
cerebellum, almost like a faulty computer program.
To "unlearn" these bad behaviors, the brain
must then be retrained over time through proprioceptive work. This
work stimulates the muscles and joints of the body to take on a new physical
cue (like resetting the computer program). It includes, but is not limited to:
chiropractic, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Kinesiotaping,
Factor PM (working on the muscles in the opposite direction they usually are), and
active rehabilitation exercises including yoga.
So, take the time this spring to balance
your posture and feel great! Proprioceptive work is done on athletes all over the country,
including Lance Armstrong who says, "Our chiropractor was the most important
member of the US Postal team!"

Oh No, Grandma Threw Her
Back Out!
|
By Paul Fuhrman, DC
We've all talked about or
heard of people "throwing their backs out." But, when a back gets "thrown out"
what exactly in the back gets thrown and where does it go? To answer these
questions we must do a quick review of the anatomy of the spine.
The spine can be thought of like
the mast of a sailboat. The mast is incredibly strong - able to withstand the
large force of the sails. It is reinforced with multiple wires that are anchored
around the ship. Without these wires, the mast would come toppling down with
the slightest breeze. Within the spine, bones act as the mast and the
muscles, tendons and ligaments are the wires. Our nervous system coordinates
the incredibly complex action of monitoring and adjusting the tension of these "wires"
so that we can move fluidly while keeping the spine stable.
Find out what happens when you throw your back out.
