ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

"Berry Good For You." Consumer Reports on Health. October 2010

Berries taste great, especially in the summer when they're freshest. But they're also developing a reputation as nutritional powerhouses with special benefits.

Urinary Tract Infections- Cranberry and blueberry juices can prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall, which may help prevent UTIs.

Memory- Blueberries and strawberries contain polyphenols, substances that might reduce inflammation in blood vessels in the brain. And a recent study found that a glass of blueberry juice with each meal every day for three months improved the memory of nine people who were experiencing mild memory loss.

Cancer- Animal and laboratory studies suggest that certain compounds in blueberries and strawberries might prevent the growth of breast and colon cancer cells.

Heart Disease- Animal studies conducted by researchers from the National Institutes of Health suggest that a blueberry-enriched diet might offer protection against heart attacks.

Shopping for berries- Look for plump, firm fruit with a sweet aroma. Opt for fresh or frozen berries instead of jams or jellies which are often packed with added sugar. Splurge on the organic varieties to avoid harmful pesticides, especially for blueberries and strawberries.

Wait to Worry

Attitude is Everything

By Viki Hitzges

I used to worry. A lot. The more I fretted, the more proficient I became at it. Anxiety begets anxiety. I even worried that I worried too much! Ulcers might develop. My health could fail. My finances could deplete to pay the hospital bills.

A comedian once said, "I tried to drown my worries with gin, but my worries are equipped with flotation devices." While not a drinker, I certainly could identify! My worries could swim, jump and pole vault!

To get some perspective, I visited a well known, Dallas businessman, Fred Smith. Fred mentored such luminaries as motivational whiz Zig Ziglar, business guru Ken Blanchard and leadership expert John Maxwell. Fred listened as I poured out my concerns and then said, "Viki, you need to learn to wait to worry."

As the words sank in, I asked Fred if he ever spent time fretting. (I was quiet certain he wouldn't admit it if he did. He was pretty full of testosterone-even at age 90.) To my surprise, he confessed that in years gone by he had been a top-notch worrier!

"I decided that I would wait to worry!" he explained. "I decided that I'd wait until I actually had a reason to worry-something that was happening, not just something that might happen- before I worried."

"When I'm tempted to get alarmed," he confided, "I tell myself, 'Fred, you've got to wait to worry! Until you know differently, don't worry.' And I don't. Waiting to worry helps me develop the habit of not worrying and that helps me not be tempted to worry."

Fred possessed a quick mind and a gift for gab. As such, he became a captivating public speaker. "I frequently ask audiences what they were worried about this time last year. I get a lot of laughs," he said, "because most people can't remember. Then I ask if they have a current worry- you see nods from everybody. Then I remind them that the average worrier is 92% inefficient- only 8% of what we worry about ever comes true."

Charlie Spurgeon said it best. "Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength."

Next time, remember the acronym FEAR...False Evidence Appearing Real.

MESSAGE OF THE WEEK

Constancy of Purpose is the First Principle of Success

It is critical to your success that you have a well-thought-out plan for your life and that you stick with it regardless of what others may say and the obstacles you encounter. There will always be faultfinders and those who attempt to persuade you that your goals aren't worth the effort you put into achieving them. Those people will never go far, and they will be the first to ask for your help after you have passed them by. Virtually every successful person has considered giving up at some point in his or her struggle to reach the top. And many breakthroughs occurred soon after those same people rededicated themselves to their purpose. There is no known obstacle that cannot be overcome by a person who has constancy of purpose, a Positive Mental Attitude, and the discipline and willpower to succeed.
