"Prescription: Ask Questions First"  Deborah Kotz. US News & World Report, August 2010.

These days, when a full 61 percent of adults use at least one medication to treat a chronic health problem, many people expect a prescription at every doctor's appointment. (And doctors are often all too happy to oblige.)  Since every drug has side effects and may interact with other meds, though, you shouldn't just swallow any pill ordered without a second thought. First ask:

1. Why am I getting this drug?

2. What are the risks vs. the benefits?

3. Is there an older drug or lifestyle alteration that works just as well?

4. Will it interfere with my other medications?

5. Does this drug prevent real clinical events?

THE DONKEY STORY

One day, a farmer's donkey fell down into the well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway. It just wasn't worth it to try and retrieve the donkey.

So, he invited all of his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly.

Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and step up.

Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Moral of the donkey story: Life is going to shovel dirt on you- all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping and never giving up. Learn to shake it off and step up!

We always have a choice. We can focus on the dirt or shake it off and step up. It is time to focus on stepping up. How can you step up now? Are you setting goals, visualizing, doing daily affirmations, exercising, eating well, getting enough rest, and having a loving attitude to step up?

Are you stepping up with more energy? Are you becoming more knowledgeable and certain as well as committed and passionate? Do you have a coach to help you step up by inspiring you and holding you accountable?

Are you dedicating time being an effective and productive human being?

What are you doing to raise your self-esteem and confidence? Are you stepping up by being responsible, moderate, flexible, and accountable?

Do you finally realize that who you are will determine the results you produce and that your identity is as important as your strategies? Do the world a favor and step up today!

MESSAGE OF THE WEEK

Dear patients and friends,

Your kindness and generosity can make a big difference in people's lives. For the past several years we have partnered with the Comedy Cures Foundation, City Harvest, Save The Children, Robert F. Tipaldi 9/11 Foundation, and now we are proud to support Daniel's Music Foundation. DMF is a non- profit organization that provides musical instruction to all individuals with disabilities in the New York City area.

"Daniel Trush is the life force that drives Daniel's Music Foundation. His happiness and zest for life is incomparable and his dynamic, positive, and friendly personality is contagious. In 1997, while playing basketball as a 12 year-old, a brain aneurysm burst in his head. He was trapped in a coma for 30 days, and spent the next 341 days hospitalized. For the next 2 years he was in a wheelchair and today he walks on his own. Daniel's recovery was so greatly enhanced by learning to play the keyboard that he and his family were inspired to found Daniel's Music Foundation."

Please step up and help us help Daniel's Music Foundation. Please give what you can to help DMF.

During the month of January you can have a free relaxation CD or DVD in exchange for a donation to DMF.
