TAKE TIME TO STRETCH

There are only 3 types of exercise: CARDIOVASCULAR, STRENGHTENING, and STRETCHING.  Every possible exercise that is performed falls under one of these three categories.

The reality is most people don't enjoy stretching and would rather be on a bicycle or treadmill (cardio) or lifting weights (strengthening).  Stretching is one of the most overlooked aspects of exercise, yet it is absolutely vital to good health.  For 30 years I have been emphasizing the benefits of stretching, and those who incorporate stretching into their routines see a significant difference in their lives.

As we get older our muscles get tighter and our mobility decreases.  Therefore, it is imperative that we not only stretch, but we must also be aware of our posture and incorporate a consistent program of manual trigger point muscle therapy.  These three components of stretching, posture and muscle work will ultimately reduce pain, improve circulation, resiliency, detoxify muscles, increase longevity, slow the aging process and reduce the risk of future injuries.

I will be happy to show you and discuss with you proper stretches, corrective postural techniques and to test which of your muscles are contracted so you can have them treated properly to get you on the road to feeling great in 2010.  Just call Katie (212-245-2099) to schedule a mutually convenient time.

P.S.  If you are stretching on your own here are four tips for safe stretching:

1.  Don't bounce.  Hold your position for a specific period of time.

2.  Don't stretch cold muscles.  Always warm up by walking or moving around.

3.  Don't overstretch.  There should be a little discomfort, especially if you are not used to stretching, but it should not be painful.

4.  Don't stretch a muscle improperly.  If you are not sure of the proper stretch or how to perform it, always ask for assistance from a professional.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

"The Surprising Power of Gentle Exercise," Consumer Reports on Health, January 2009.

"Yoga, tai chi, and Pilates are well known for their ability to improve balance, flexibility, and mood.  And because they put minimal pressure on the hips and knees, they're good for older people or those with joint problems.  But growing research shows they offer other benefits as well.  Each technique has unique strengths, so choose the one that meets your needs...

Yoga...Protect the heart...Promote healthy eating...Control pain...Ease asthma...Improve sleep...

Tai Chi...Slow bone loss...Boost immunity...Ease the pain of arthritis...Aid cancer patients...

Pilates...Ease chronic back pain...Burn calories and boost fitness...Improve mental focus..."
