Eating Smart Goes To A New Level

The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's are known for overindulgence, especially with food and drink.  This can have a deleterious effect not only on our physical health but our mental and emotional health as well.  Refreshingly, Psychology Today featured an article on the Top Ten "Smart" Foods.

1.  Blueberries provide antioxidants that mop up free radicals, improving memory, reversing age-related declines in balance and coordination, and reducing blood pressure.

2.  Dark leafy greens contain folate, B6 and B12 that break down toxic homocysteines, linked both to Alzheimer's disease and coronary disorders.

3.  Fatty fish like salmon, sardines and herring are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which enhance communication between nerve cells, aiding learning and memory.

4.  Spinach has antioxidants that slow down age-related problems with the central nerve system, which diminishes cognitive deficits.

5.  Red wine or grape juice promotes long life and improves short term memory and motor skills, not only because of the high concentration of antioxidants, but also by increasing the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

6.  Whole grains and brown rice are loaded with vitamins and magnesium, which support cognitive health.  The B6 also helps by dropping homocysteine levels.

7.  Hot cocoa is also a great source of antioxidants.

8.  The antioxidants in nuts, especially almonds and walnuts, lower blood cholesterol, and nuts prove less fattening than other fatty foods.  Walnuts are also rich in omega-3's.

9.  Olive oil, especially extra virgin, supplies polyphenols, potent antioxidants that lessen blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

10.  Finally, garlic has antibacterial and antiviral compounds that assist the immune system.  Its powerful antioxidants, especially in raw crushed garlic, fend off aging and benefit the cardiovascular system.

This kind of vital information should be common knowledge, so it's nice to be reminded.

Here are two simple rules to help you:

1.   Eat foods that are the colors of the rainbow- ROYGBIV.  Red (tomatoes), Orange (oranges), Yellow (bananas), Green (broccoli), etc...

2.   Try to purchase foods without labels, such as fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc...).

EAT WELL AND LIVE WELL!

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK:

"Dr. Oz Will See You Now," O Magazine, October 2009.

"About 80 percent of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their life...The research is positive on chiropractic treatment, physical therapy and stress relief- they all help ease back pain.  (As Paul McCormick says, with rare exceptions, surgery is unnecessary.)   The key is to get moving again as soon as possible after the pain hits, and then make sure you take steps to prevent a return."
