CHIROPRACTIC A
WINNER IN HEALTH REFORM
On November
21, 2009 the Newark, NJ Star-Ledger (Alan Fram Associated Press)
reported the following:
Senate Health Bill
Precise in Picking Winners and Losers, Gainers Include Chiropractors...
"Chiropractors
get a lift in the Senate health care bill; thanks to a senator from the state
practitioners consider the birthplace of their profession - Iowa.
Search the
fine print of the bill unveiled this week by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
(D-Nev.) and you'll find scores of provisions making winners out of some
interest groups and losers out of others, from makers of costly biological
drugs to insurance company executives.
It's not surprising
considering the $1 trillion, 10-year price tag of the 2,074-page legislation.
Chiropractors,
sometimes criticized as unscientific by medical doctors, could join health
teams designed to help primary care physicians coordinate the treatment of patients. Though the precise financial impact is
unclear, the language would help steer more patients to a profession whose
participation in many federal programs is limited, including Medicare,
Medicaid, and the medical systems for veterans, the military and civil
servants.
"It's
important because it just further legitimizes the services that are delivered
by a chiropractor, and recognizes they are well received by the patient public,"
said John Falardeau, lobbyist for the American Chiropractic Association.
The language
was approved earlier this year by the Senate health committee. Falardeau said that the panel's chairman,
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) was largely responsible for getting it included by
Reid, who wrote the final Senate bill behind closed doors. The lobbyist said numerous chiropractors and
their patients contacted Harkin and other senators to push for the language..."
On November 13,
2009 Business Week reported:
Nurturing
Spirituality in the Workforce, Jennifer Myers
"Lack of job
security, disillusionment and the ceaseless demand to do more with less have
triggered the collective angst of an entire work force. To cope, many workers are looking inward for
new meaning and purpose in their lives.
Some employees looking for solace in these troubling times are turning to
their employers, who have taken initiatives to raise spirituality in the
workplace.
While
companies have long addressed the physical and emotional needs of workers, they
have been traditionally hesitant to deal with the spiritual side, fearing it treads
to close to religion, says Vince Brewerton, executive director of the Centre
for Spirituality and the Workplace at St. Mary's University in Halifax.
In fact,
spirituality means different things to different people, but in the workplace
it's less about formal religion and more about helping people to explore how
they can find worth in the work that they do and lead a more meaningful life
aligned with their values, says Linda Lewis-Daly, principal of workplace
wellness consultancy Lewis-Daly and Associates in Toronto.
In the last
six months, she says, she's seen an uptick in requests from companies to find
ways to make spiritually helpful moves, such as bringing programs on site for
meditation, yoga and tai chi.
"There is an
awakening in workplaces," she says.
"The
turbulence that the economic times have created has required that they go
deeper because people are searching for meaning."
"There's a
huge hunger among workers to get in touch with what they honor in their lives,
and to strengthen the connection between who they are and what they do," Mr.
Brewerton says.
Those
companies taking a holistic approach to the spirit are finding that soothing
employees' collective angst and helping them feel connected to a larger
community can boost satisfaction, loyalty, resiliency, retention, and
recruitment, and ultimately, the company's sustainability, Ms. Lewis-Daly says."

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK:
Get Well, or Pay Up, Julien Mincer, Newsday, June
14, 2009
In conjunction
with the above article Nurturing Spirituality
in the Workplace, both employees and employers are searching for
holistic ways to draw on your own inner strengths. The time is now to prove it to yourself that
by improving your lifestyle, you will have the answers to improving your
health.
"More
employers are offering cash, discounts and even lower health-insurance premiums
to entice workers to participate in a variety of programs. And starting next year, employees could have
further incentive to get healthy as more companies add penalties to insurance
premiums for workers who don't partake.
Other offerings
include heavily discounted weight-loss programs and free or discounted gym
memberships. At some companies,
employees who participate are rewarded with gift cards or lower insurance
premiums.
At insurer
Aetna, workers and their families could earn up to $1,200 back each year for
completing a health-risk assessment, identifying and completing family health
goals, making healthy food choices and participating in fitness activities..."
