UNDERSTANDING WELLNESS
With my 30 year anniversary in practice quickly approaching next month, I have had the opportunity to meet and work with a wide variety of people every day. If there is one common theme that I've seen in our patients it is the challenge of 'self-discipline.' Over the years, patients have entered our office with various symptoms such as back pain, neck pain, headaches and many other syndromes and expect to be "fixed" now. What I've learned is we've been successful in helping patients feel better and eliminate their symptoms, but not as successful inspiring and motivating patients to do the things necessary to be healthy and achieve wellness. Patients coming in and seeking relief for their symptoms is actually part of the medical model of sickness care, not health or wellness care. In order to move from a symptom or relief model to a wellness or self-discipline model, it is critical that you understand the following: 1. What is the cause of your problem? Or in other words, what combination of physical, chemical or emotional stressors actually caused your body to break down? (See attached chart*) 2. What do you need to do (self-discipline) on your own to help correct your problem? 3. Are you ready to commit to a lifestyle change for the rest of your life, rather than short-term relief? 4. How can the treatments we provide allow and help your body function at a higher level? You see, it is imperative that we understand that we all have problems, symptoms or challenges, but we also have the solutions inside of us. Remember, healing comes from within. It is our responsibility to educate and empower you to live a healthier lifestyle and help facilitate your healing by manually removing the interferences and blockages in your muscular and nervous systems. In closing, I have found that those of you who own a greater understanding of wellness or self-discipline make the best health decisions for yourself and your family.
