If you haven't made it down to a Friday Fish Fry yet, you are really missing out. On July 10th, the weather was perfect (for what seems like the first time this summer) and we had a great turnout. Everyone agreed that the Lincklaen House did a terrific job and is certainly up to the task of providing us with great food for this WBYC traditional end to the week. Although the weather this past Friday wasn't as good, we still had a big crowd all enjoying good food and company while the rain came down outside.
Many thanks to Michelle Sullivan and Kara Connellan for Ice Cream on July 4th. Always enjoyed by all, Ice Cream and Independence Day seem to be a perfect fit. Of course we appreciate it more when the temperature is 80 rather than 60 but this is Central New York. The skies clear for a spectacular fireworks display which is all that really counts!
You still have time to sign up for the Member Guest Dinner Dance (see sidebar) which we hope will have better luck with the weather. Dinner is being provided by The Lincklaen House and the menu looks terrific. Later in this newsletter, you will also find a link to the flyer for the very first 50's Swingtime Ball. Al Centeno and his crew have been working hard on this inaugural event and it promises to be a fun evening.
August is just around the corner and our Junior fleet is preparing for it's annual trek to Rochester for the Junior Olympics. We have Junior Sailings going to the semifinals of the Chub Symthe Regatta (US Sailing Junior Singlehanded Championship) and the Lightning Junior North Americans in Sodus Bay. These, in addition to Central New York Sailing's weekly 420/Laser/Opti regattas keep all our Juniors very busy.
See you at the club,

| JUNIOR SAILING LASER CLINIC |
On Tuesday, July 7th, Scott Ikle, head sailing coach at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY and an international, champion sailor himself, returned to Willow Bank for the third year to conduct a laser clinic. The event was co-sponsored by the Central New York Sailing Association and drew about two-dozen high school aged sailors from six central New York clubs. Scott was also at Willow Bank, on June 23rd, to provide instruction for youth sailing coaches from the central New York area clubs. Both clinics, which had been initiated at the request of the Willow Bank Junior Sailing program, were a huge success. Attendees (sailors, coaches and spectators) at both events have provided very positive feedback, describing the events as very beneficial. Everyone agreed that these instructional programs should be continued and expanded for next year. |
| SUNFISH AND FLYING DUTCHMEN REGATTAS |
WBYC has had a very busy regatta schedule this summer. In addition to our own weekly club races, we hosted a Sunfish regatta on a very blustery July 10, Saturday. It looked liked all the sailers were working very hard, and were greatful to the Race Committee who set and finished five short but demanding races.
On July 18th and 19th, we hosted the Flying Dutchman Cuspidor Regatta. The FD Sailors had a partly sunny, mostly cloudy weekend, but the rain held off and everyone had a great time.
Next up is the Finn Toilet Bowl Regatta August 15 & 16.
Sail Fast!
(More photos of both regattas are posted on the website - click on the pictures to access.) |
| LITTLE SALTS |
Do you have a 6 or 7 year old who is anxious to start sailing? We are holding one of our very popular "LIttle Salts" programs during the mornings of Session 3 - July 27th thru August 7th. The primary goal of this program is to teach very young kids to love sailing and boating. If you are interested in learning more about LITTLE SALTS please contact Marisa Woods, WBYC Head Sailing Instructor, at 315-420-8471. |

| ValvTect Certified Marina |
Willow Bank Yacht Club has switched to nationally recognized ValvTect Marine Gasoline for the 2009 season, as an upgrade to its Club operations. ValvTech Marine Fuels are only available through "ValvTect Certified Marinas." Certification for WBYC was completed in May, and included tank and delivery equipment (gasoline pump) inspection. Power boaters on Cazenovia Lake now have a new gasoline available that is specially formulated for heavy-duty, high performance marine engines.
