From the Bridge:
Memorial Day is just around the corner and the club is almost ready. When you come down for opening weekend you will see that we have made a lot of improvements to our physical plant.
The Galley window has been redesigned to improve the safety of employees working the register and this also allowed us a chance to have Ship Store items on display and easily accessible to the Galley staff. We also have brand new windows in the Owahgena Room which, in addition to looking great, will improve air flow as they will actually open and close.
Work Parties have been very busy repairing, cleaning and painting so we are in pretty good shape all around. I am always awed by the speed and efficiency by which the club goes from frozen boat storage to a live yacht club every spring. It is a testament to our members and their dedication that this happens so readily.
We are welcoming fourteen new family members and one individual member to the club for this season, so if you see an unfamiliar face, please say hello. Our new members have a variety of backgrounds and pursuits, but all bring a love of the water and most of sailing.
You should have received your invitation to the Commodore's Ball in the mail recently. I have been Owahgena to have a great committee working on this party all winter, so it should be a lot of fun. The food and band are going to be great, so I hope you can make it.
I would like to especially thank all of the people who came out and did a Work Party this spring. We had many members who did more than one and I am sure that Rich would join me in saying that Willow Bank would not be able to function without all of the hard work and effort put forth by our members year-in and year-out. Mostly I think everyone also has a good time and gets to meet new people, so if you missed your Work Party this spring, try to get to one in the fall.
See you at the club,
Commodore |

| MOORING LABELS & NOTES |
If you keep your boat(s) at the Yacht Club for the summer, you should receive 2009 stickers for them in the next week or so. If you have a wet slip or lawn spot, you will receive two stickers; one for the boat and one for the trailer. If you have a rack space, you will only receive one sticker.
If you have any changes from last year or have any requests for changes that you haven't already told me about, please email me or call 655-2008. Email is preferred. If you don't remember where your boat is supposed to be, check out the mooring maps on the website.
Please put your stickers on your boat ASAP! They need to be placed where they can be seen and read when your boat is in its slot. Also please remember to remove trailers from club property as soon as you can. It is against our zoning to keep empty trailers and you face a $200/month fine for leaving your trailer unattended.

| CHANGES TO THE WBYC RACING RULES |
The Race Committee met several times over the winter and when you get the Directory/Yearbook updates in the next couple of weeks, you will notice some changes that were made to the WBYC Racing Rules. (These are in addition to the changes made by IYRA/USSailing.) Following are the important changes which you are responsible to know before racing at the Club this summer. Most of these rules made to improve safety and make the RC's Job easier.
3.2: Notice to Competitors Any notices will be posted on the Bulletin Board near the Galley at WBYC, prior to the shore gun. In the event of such a notice, a "L" (come within hail) flag shall be hoisted on the club flagpole. Such notices may modify the WBYC racing rules. Changes may also be made from the race committee boat following the hoisting of the "come within hail" code flag "L" (yellow and black, checkered pattern). 3.2.1: Checking In Prior to the warning signal of each race, boats intending to race shall sail past the stern of the signal boat and hail her sail number until acknowledged by the race committee. 3.2.2: Retiring A boat that retires from a race shall notify the race committee before leaving the race area, or if that is not possible, she shall notify the galley or yard staff as soon as practicable after she returns to shore. 3.2.3: Sail Numbers Each boat shall register their sail number with their respective Fleet Captain at the start of the season and shall sail only with that sail number except with the express permission of the Race Committee and Fleet Captain . |
| Milton J. Rubenstein Memorial Trophy |
The Milton J. Rubenstein Memorial Trophy is both a perpetual and an individual trophy established and presented every year by the Rubenstein family. It is awarded to the winner of the Free-For-All Series raced during Memorial Day Weekend and is open to any active Willow Bank Yacht Club member in any type of sailboat. Boats are handicapped using the Portsmouth Handicap system.
The series consists of six races, two raced each day over the three day weekend. Starting sequence and times can be found in the WBYC RACING PROGRAM section of your WBYC Directory/Yearbook. |
| JUNIOR FLEET BEGINS PRE-SEASON SAILING |
Junior Fleet will begin preseason sailing after school on Tuesday, June 2nd, and will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the month of June. Tentative time is set for 3:30 to 6:30 but will be set formally by instructors and sailors the first week. These sessions are open to all Juniors who have been a member of Junior Fleet in the past. New Junior Fleet Members may join in with the approval of the Sailing Instructors. The cost for the entire month will be $50 and will be billed to your club account.

| LOCKERS |
|
We have several lockers available if you are looking for space to store your boat parts, beach toys or other assorted sundry. Lockers with out locks and/or labels currently have no tenant. There is a locker list in the Shop and one of the yard staff can help you find one that suits you. Never find yourself at the club without your sunscreen again...
BEACH CHAIRS
Several years ago, we cleared out all the beach chairs hanging in the sunfish sail loft, but it seems to have gotten out of control once again. Please check to see if you have old chairs hanging about and keep only current chairs.
LABEL YOUR BELONGINGS
Please make sure that all of the equipment, chairs, toys, life jackets, tubes, boats, masts, booms, sails, daggerboards, paddles, and anything else you leave at the club is clearly marked with your name. We seem to be a collection area for marine flotsam and are sure that a great deal of the stuff stored at the club belongs to people who are no longer members or no longer own the boats for which we still store the pieces and/or parts! | |
