President's Message - John Fuchko, III, CIA, President
John Fuchko
John Fuchko, CIA

Dear Colleagues:

Thank you for your confidence in electing me to serve a second term as President of the Atlanta Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. I am privileged to serve with a truly amazing group of audit professionals - thank you. Please let me share some recent successes and thoughts for the future.

Some recent successes ...

  • Our chapter has earned a "Gold" status for its ninth consecutive year. Earning a "Gold" status reflects the highest level of achievement in "service to the profession," "service to our members," and "chapter administration." Earning "Gold" status for one more year will result in the Atlanta Chapter being named a "Platinum" chapter. The "Platinum" designation is the highest possible designation for a chapter - we are well on our way to achieving this recognition and it has only been possible due to the involvement and commitment of our members.
  • Held a top-notch April chapter meeting and Chief Audit Executive roundtable to include Denny Beran, SVP Internal Audit at JC Penney
and current Chairman of the Board of the IIA as our keynote speaker. Paul Sobel, CIA was instrumental in bringing Denny Beran to this meeting and serves as the coordinator of our Chief Audit Executive roundtable.
  • Conducted another joint meeting with the Georgia Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners in June at Morehouse College. C.O. Hollis, CIA and Bill Mulcahy, CIA took the lead on putting this meeting together with the overall assistance of our Vice President for Programs Steve Lameier.
  • We conducted a joint meeting with Financial Executives International (FEI) in May. Jim Wanserski is the President of the FEI Atlanta Chapter and was a valued partner in bringing this meeting together. I also would like to thank Sue Mills, Alan Barnes, CIA and Randy Earley for their assistance in bringing this meeting to fruition.

 Looking forward ...

We still have much that we are doing and much to do over the coming months!

  •  The Atlanta Conference 2012 - Bridging the Gap: This must-attend, IIA Atlanta signature event is scheduled for September 21. Our keynote speakers include IIA Global President and CEO Richard Chambers, CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CRMA, Former Mayor of Atlanta Shirley Franklin, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Dennis Lockhart, and inspirational speaker Judson Laipply. Please check out additional details at http://www.theatlantaconference.net/ and go ahead and take advantage of our Early Bird registration fee of $200 at http://www.theatlantaconference.net/Registration_Information.html ... the Early Bird rate expires July 31!
  • Our July Chapter meeting theme is "Internal Audit and Enterprise Risk Management." We have three strong practitioners to include Keith Cureton from UPS, Jim Presmanes from Haverty's and Scott Woodison from the University System of Georgia. Sterling Roth and Vijay Pinto are taking the lead on putting this program together.
  •  The IIA International Conference is being held in Boston from July 8-11 (http://www.iia2012ic.org/). We strongly encourage your participation and attendance at this preeminent IIA event.
  •   Sue Mills is putting together our August Chapter meeting. The topic is Internal Audit and Mergers and Acquisition. Gerry Boudreau from Ernst & Young will present. Bob Portnell from Rock-Tenn, Jonathon Corley from Agco, and Ron Lepionka from AGL Resources will serve as panelists in what should be a relevant and riveting presentation on this timely topic.

Looking inward ...

Your Board of Governors will meet for a planning advance (think planning retreat) on August 3. Our goal is to set a course for the chapter as we look forward over the next decade. Your perspective as a member is most welcome. We will be formally soliciting feedback for our efforts but I would also encourage you to contact me directly with any ideas or perspectives that you would like to share. Personally, I would like to think about how we:

  • Expand our presence within the internal audit profession and the IIA in North America and globally.
  • Institutionalize the excellence that characterizes the Atlanta Chapter.
  • Create options for the Chapter into the future.

Warmest personal regards,

John M. Fuchko, III, CIA

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) announced in May that Tim Tripp has earned a William S. Smith Certificate of Honor Award for outstanding performance on the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) examination. Tim is currently the Chief Audit Executive at Newell Rubbermaid Inc. and a member the IIA Atlanta Chapter Executive Board. The CIA exam reflects the current state of the art in internal auditing and evaluates technical competence in important subject areas related to internal auditing.

The Certificate of Honor is one of the prestigious William S. Smith Awards for Outstanding CIA Examination Performance. The Smith Awards are named in honor of the first Chairman of the Board of Regents, who was a driving force behind the development of the CIA program. Consideration for the Smith awards is based on a candidate's performance on the core parts of the CIA exam (Parts I, II and III) and is contingent on a candidate's successful completion of the full exam in one sitting. This award recognizes the fifty best exam papers submitted during the fiscal 2011/2012 testing cycle following those of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medalists and ten Certificate of Excellence recipients. Please join me in congratulating Tim on this noteworthy achievement!

Dr. Sumners to offer another CIA Review Course

Dr. Glenn Sumners, Director, Center for Internal Auditing at Louisiana State University will again be presenting the CIA Exam Review Course in Atlanta from August 13 - 17, 2012, which is earlier than normal.

With major changes to the exam next year, the earlier date will give candidates more time to take and pass the exam under the existing format. IIA Atlanta is confident that Dr. Sumners will help candidates "prepare for success".

The cost for the CIA Review course is $100 per day.  Part 3 is a two day course; all other parts are one day.

Registration is open.  Please click HERE for details and to register and pay for the course.

For more information, contact C. O. Hollis, CIA at chollis@morehouse.edu, or 404-614-8562.

The 7th Annual Student Day Event is scheduled for  February 22, 2013 at the KSU Center from 11 AM to 2:30 PM. We had our biggest and best event in February and sponsorship tables are now available at $75 each. Please contact Barbara Jesup to sign up for one of these tables officially. We only have 22 sponsorship tables available. Sign up early as we had a waiting list at last year's event.

The 2nd
Annual Internal Audit Case Competition at GSU's Buckhead Campus is scheduled for  Friday, November 16, 2012.  It is open to all students in the State of Georgia and promises to be even bigger and better than last year's very successful event. There are still sponsorship levels available -- 48% committed.  We just need a commitment now and you will be invoiced later. Please contact Barbara Jesup to sign up for a sponsorship level for this big upcoming event.

Student table sponsorship available for $150 - which allows four KSU or GSU students to attend the Chapter monthly meeting for free.

Volunteers

VP Volunteer Services, Alan Barnes, CIA

What a great start for our new chapter year as we had six great volunteers for the June 2012 joint meeting with the GA chapter of the ACFE held at Morehouse Campus. It was our first time to hold a meeting at this location and what a beautiful setting with nearly 200 total in attendance. All went smooth thanks to our IIA volunteers Chris Fugate, Gordon Stark, Chris Kirk, Pierre Dait, Lindsay Miller, and Marijane Selvaggio. We have started building a volunteer database and have already received information from approximately 74 people with around 76% expressing interest in helping for The Atlanta Conference to be held at the Cobb Galleria on Sept 21st and about 54% interested in volunteering for a monthly chapter meeting. Our volunteers make the difference in the success of our chapter and we look forward to providing opportunities for all that express and interest.

There is always room for more...thoughts, ideas and involvement!

If you wish to volunteer and have not completed this survey, please do so in order to be included in the volunteer database.
