Tobin Hill Pride!  Quality of Life Campaign

Through partnerships with city departments, neighborhood volunteers and grass roots communications, THCA has:
  • Dramatically reduced graffiti tagging
  • Reduced litter in the Historic District, N. St. Mary's business corridor and other areas
  • Successfully closed over a dozen outstanding code compliance complaints
  • Formed the Tobin Hill Women's Book Club
  • Found sponsors for more than seven neighborhood socials open to members and non-members alike
  • Cleared a large vacant lot, visible to downtown commuter traffic, of trash and other construction debris. We received no help from the lot's owner, who lives in an adjacent community.
  • Planted 19 Texas Mountain Laurels in Tobin Hill, provided by the City of San Antonio.

Tobin Hill Commercial Revitalization Zone Partnership Project Approved
Local Business & Property Owners Urged to Become Involved

THCA has been approved by the City of San Antonio to move ahead on a partnership project to establish a Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization Zone (NCRZ) in Tobin Hill.  These zones have driven many well-known revitalization efforts in San Antonio, including Southtown and Brooks CityBase, and have the potential to drive hundreds of thousand of dollars of investment into the neighborhood while supporting local businesses.

The Partnership Project will be led by neighborhood business owners and commercial property owners to focus on revitalizing the commercial areas of McCullough between Ashby and Locust, Dewey & Locust between McCullough and Main, and Main from Ashby to Maple.

The next THCRZ meeting is Tuesday, July 21 from 6:00-7:30 pm at 225 West Poplar.  All business and property owners who are interested in participating are welcome.  For more information please contact Joe Shaffer at 210.632.4845 or email

Historic Window Restoration Workshop

Windows are often character defining features of historic buildings but people are pressured in the name of energy efficiency to replace them. Most of the time, however, the more cost effective and sustainable solution is the rehabilitation of existing windows. Many of the typical problems associated with wood windows can be handled with proper maintenance and repair, extending the life of the window for another 100 years.

The City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation and the UTSA College of Architecture will present a two day workshop on July 31-August 1, 2009 at the
Historic Fire Station #11, 323 S. Frio Street.

The two-day workshop will provide hands-on training using the Fire Station windows. Participants will completely restore the windows by replacing glass, repainting, and replacing them into the window opening. Training begins at 9:00 am at the Fire Station.

For more information or to register, contact Molly Matthews in the City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation at 210.207.1460 or email OHP@sanantonio.gov.

The Arts Are Flourishing in Tobin Hill; Gallery Walk Enters Third Month

Art on display at M4 Dance - June 2009A huge thank you to our neighbors, the more than 40 San Antonio artists and eight venue owners who worked so hard to help the Tobin Hill Art Alliance produce the first two Second Friday "Art on the Hill" Gallery Walk events.

The inaugural event on June 12 attracted hundreds of people to Tobin Hill's "Triangle" area to view fine art, dance, music, architecture, there was something for everyone.  It was fantastic to see families strolling around, greeting neighbors and having fun.  Many others were visiting Tobin Hill for the first time and liking what they saw.

Tobin Hill Art Alliance Chair Luis Lopez and Co-Chair Margaret Halsema of "La Casa Rosa" say the Alliance's mission is to focus on fine art and extend the Gallery walk further north on St. Mary's Street and further east on Josephine to eventually connect with Pearl Brewery and the River Walk.

THCA and the Art Alliance are collaborating to raise funds to place public art in strategic places throughout Tobin Hill for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.  THCA understands the positive impact art has on a community, both culturally and economically.  The Tobin Hill Art Alliance installed 2 pieces of public sculpture on June 12, Reflections, by James Wyatt Hendricks and Mixed Ingredientsby Larry Graeber.  The 2 new pieces join Michael Bigger's Cor-Linche Triad, located in the Triangle at the intersections of Dewey, N. St. Mary's and Josephine Streets.

Join friends, neighbors and art lovers around San Antonio for the third Art on the Hill Gallery Walk scheduled for August 14 from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m.  For more information, email Luis Lopez.
